Apollo was the son of the God Zeus and Leto, daughter of a Titan. His most important oracle was at Delphi, the site of his victory over the serpant Python. After this victory, he was known as Pythian Apollo. The God was said to of established the Pythian Games to commemorate his victory.
Apollo was an expert Archer, had a great talent in music, and was a fantastic athlete, and was credited of being the first ever winner of the Olympian Games. Click here for a picture of the site of the Games.
His music brought joy amoung the other Gods, and his main instrument was the Lyre, an instrument played by plucking strings on a Kithara, played by proffesional players, which was a box Lyre with thick hollow arms.
He gave the gift of healing the wounded and sick to mortals, and he had a son called Asclepius, God of Medicine and Healing.
Some tales picture Apollo as cruel and stern. Apollo was represented in ancient Greek art more than any other God; this probably would be because of his male beauty.
