| Ray Evernham is the owner of Evernham Motorsports. A former modified driver, Evernham has had alot of success in Nascar. Called to be the crew cheif for young up-start Jeff Gordon. In 1995 they won their first championship together. That Momentum stayed with them through the 1996 season. Jeff Gordon and Evernham finished 2nd in the points race by a mere 37 points. In 1997 Gordon and Evernham would win another champion ship. They started out the year with a win in the famed Daytona 500. Gordon and Evernham would post a career best 10 wins in the 1997 season. Evernham and Gordon's motivator was the catch phrase they came up with called "Refuse To Lose". All of the #24 team members would wear "Refuse To Lose" shirts under their suits. 1998 was a dream season for Gordon and Evernham. Posting 13 wins and winning their 3rd championship together. In 1999 Evernham was hired by Dodge to be the head of their NASCAR operation. Dodge hadnt been active in the sport since 1985. He bought Bill Elliott's race shop and got his team started. Bill Elliott had been driving for his own team and got hired to drive Evernham's #9 Dodge Intrepid. Evernham also hired young gun Casey Atwood to drive his second car the, #19 Dodge Intrepid. Evernham would debut his new Dodge's in the 2001 Winston Cup season. Bill Elliott got the pole for the Daytona 500. Elliott would get Dodge back into victory lane by winning the next to final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. That day turned out to be a good day for Evernham's whole team. With Elliott winning and Casey Atwood finishing 3rd, His best career winston cup finish. After 2001 Evernham released Atwood and hired Jeremy Mayfield to drive the #19 car. In 2002 Bill Elliott won back to back races at Pocono and Indianapolis. In 2003 Bill Elliott won his final race (so far) at Rockingham. Ray Evernham was forced to find a replacement to drive his #9 Dodge. The driver was Kasey Kahne. Everybody was not expecting much out of Kahne. Evernham was confident that Kahne would be NASCAR's new young gun. He was right. In Kahne's 2nd start he almost won. He finished second to Matt Kenseth. Also that year Jeremy Mayfield made it into the first ever Chase for the Cup. He finished 10th in points that year. 2004 was a good year for Evernham. 2005 was not. Kasey Kahne, was expected to have a dream year in 2005, but wrecks and engine failures relegated him to a 23rd place finish in points. But at least for Evernham Mayfield once again made the chase. 2006 was a dream year for Evernham. Kahne won 6 races. But he fired his driver Jeremy Mayfield after Indy. He Hired Elliott Sadler to drive the #19 Dodge. Success came right away. Elliott started 2nd at Michigan. Evernham is looking forward to 2007 |
