Rodney Childers joined Valvoline Evernham Racing at the end of 2005, taking on the responsibility of building the new No. 10 team for the 2006 season. He led Scott Riggs and the No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools team through a successful first year which saw them post a win in the NEXTEL Open, two poles, one top-five and eight top-10 finishes. Childers will again serve as Team Director for the 2007 season. He brings with him not only a strong background in racing, but also a long-standing relationship with Riggs.

Childers began racing go-karts in the World Karting Association when he was 12 years old. He picked up seven South Carolina state championships and five national championships before moving to the Late Model Stock Car division in 1997. It was during his late model days that Childers first became acquainted with Riggs as the two competed against each other at tracks across the Carolinas.

From 1999 to 2002 he raced in several series including the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series, Hooters Pro Cup Series and in 2000, he even competed in a NASCAR Busch Series race at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

After 15 years of racing, Childers decided to make a transition from the drivers seat to the pit box. He went to work for Penske Racing South in 2003 as head mechanic for the No. 77 Dodge and was promoted to car chief in 2004.

Childers moved to MBV Motorsports for the 2005 season where he was car chief for Riggs No. 10 team. In June he was promoted to team crew chief. The team scored two top-five and four top-10 finishes and picked up the pole award for the spring race at Martinsville Speedway.

When Riggs made the move to Valvoline Evernham Racing at the end of the 2005 season, Childers went with him.

The reason Im a crew chief is because of Ray Evernham, so having the opportunity to work for him is a pretty cool deal, Childers said. I started watching Ray when he worked with Jeff Gordon and I was impressed by what he was able to accomplish. I told myself then that I wanted to be a crew chief.

When Scott told me he was going to Evernham Motorsports, I told him I wanted to go too. Then, when I got the call from Ray, I jumped at the opportunity to work here because of the potential it brings. I believe our crew consists of the best in the business. What we were able to accomplish together as a first year team in 2006 gives us confidence heading into 2007 that we can mature into a regular frontrunner.
