Chief Operations Officer The Chief Operations Officer has the primary responsibility of ensuring that ship functions, such as the use of the lateral sensor array, do not interfere with one and another. S/he must prioritize resource allocations, so that the most critical activities can have every chance of success. If so required, s/he can curtail shipboard functions if s/he thinks they will interfere with the ship's current mission or routine operations. The Chief Operations Officer is a Department head, and a member of the Senior Staff. Assistant Chief Operations Officer The Chief Operations Officer cannot man the bridge at all times. Extra personnel are needed to relive and maintain ship operations. The Operations Officers are thus assistants to the Chief, fulfilling his/her duties when required, and assuming the Operations consoles if required at any time. The Assistant Chief Operations Officer is the second-in-command of the Operations Department, and can assume the role of Chief Operations Officer on a temporary or permanent basis if so needed. The Operations Officer reports to the Chief Operations Officer. Boatswain Each vessel and base has one Warrant Officer (or Chief Warrant Officer) who holds the position of Boatswain. The Boatswain (pronounced and also written "Bosun" or "Bos'n") trains and supervises personnel (including both the ship's company or base personnel as well as passengers or vessels) in general ship and base operations, repairs, and protocols; maintains duty assignments for all Operations personnel; sets the agenda for instruction in general ship and base operations; supervises auxiliary and utility service personnel and daily ship or base maintenance; coordinates all personnel cross-trained in damage control operations and supervises damage control and emergency operations; may assume any Bridge or Operations role as required; and is qualified to temporarily act at Operations if so ordered. The Boatswain reports to the Chief Operations Officer. Boatswain's Mate The Boatswain, like many other positions, needs help at times. The Boatswain's Mate is an NCO that assists the Boatswain and helps out in the Operations Department whereever needed. Materials Officer Replicator usage can allow the fabrication of nearly any critical mission part, but large-scale replication is not considered energy-efficient except in emergency situations. However, in such situations, power usage is strictly limited, so it is unwise to depend upon the availability of replicated spare parts. Thus a ship/facility must maintain a significant stock of spare parts in inventory at all times. The Materials Officer is the person responsible for the requesting part from Starfleet and maintaining the stock and inventory of all spare parts. All request for supplies are passed to the Materials Officer, who check and send the final request to the XO for final approval. A good Materials Officer is never caught short on supplies. Quartermaster The Quartermaster trains and supervises crewmen in Bridge operations, repairs, and protocols and sets the agenda for instruction in general ship and starbase operations for the Boatswainıs Mate; maintains the ship's log, the ship's clock, and watch and duty assignments for all Bridge personnel; may assume any Bridge (i.e. CONN) or Operations role (i.e. transporter) as required; and is qualified to temporarily act as Commanding or Executive Officer if so ordered. Quartermasters ensure that all officers and crew perform their duties consistent with Starfleet directives. The Quartermaster reports to the Executive Officer. Chief Security/Tactical Officer In the Chief Security Officer role, her/his duty is to ensure the safety of ship and crew. The Chief of Security takes it as their personal duty to protect the Commanding/Executive Officer on away teams. She/he is also responsible for people under arrest and the safety of guests, liked or not. S/he also is a department head and a member of the senior staff, responsible for all the crew members in her/his department and duty rosters. Security could be called the 24th century police force. In the Chief Tactical Officer role, s/he is the vessels gunman. S/he is responsible for the ships weapon system, and is also the COs tactical advisor in Star Ship Combat matters. Very often Tactical Officers are also trained in ground combat and small unit tactics. There is much more to tactical than simply overseeing the weapons console on the bridge. Tactical maintains the weapons systems aboard the ship/starbase, maintaining and reloading photons magazines. Tactical planning and current Intelligence analysis (if no Intelligence operatives are aboard) is also overseen by the tactical department. Assistant Chief Security/Tactical Officer The Assistant Chief Security/Tactical Officer S/he assists the Chief of Security/Tactical in the daily work; in issues regarding security/tactical and any administrative matters. As and if required the Deputy must be able to take command of the Security/Tactical department. Security Investigations Officer The Security Investigations Officer is an Enlisted Officer. S/He fulfills the role of a special investigator or detective when dealing with Starfleet matters aboard ship or on a planet. Coordinates with the Chief Security Officer on all investigations as needed. The Security Investigations Officer reports to the Chief of Security. Security/Tactical Officer There are several Security Officers aboard of each vessel. They are assigned to their duties by the Chief of Security/Tactical and his/her Deputy and mostly guard sensitive areas, protect people, patrol, and handle other threats to the Federation. The Tactical Officers are the vessels gunmen. They assist the Chief Security/Tactical Officer by running and maintaining the numerous weapons systems aboard the ship/starbase, and analysis and tactical planning of current missions. Very often Tactical Officers are also trained in ground combat and small unit tactics. Brig Officer The Brig Officer is a Security Officer who has chosen to specialize in a specific role. S/he guards the brig and its cells. But there are other duties associated with this post as well. S/he is responsible for any prisoner transport, and the questioning of prisoners. Often Brig Officers have a good knowledge of forcefield technology, and are experts in escaping such confinements. VIP Bodyguard VIPs are sometimes difficult people to get along with. They want this and that, and want it as soon as they ask for it. So a VIP Bodyguard has not only to guarantee for the safety of the person s/he guards, but must also be good at organizing the requests from VIPs. More than once s/he has to be diplomatic about what s/he has heard while staying in the vicinity of there VIP guests. As with brig Officers, VIP Bodyguards are specialist Security Officers, and when not serving a VIP most Bodyguards partake in normal Security duties. Master- at- Arms The Master-at-Arms trains and supervises Security crewmen in departmental operations, repairs, and protocols; maintains duty assignments for all Security personnel; supervises weapons locker access and firearm deployment; and is qualified to temporarily act as Chief of Security if so ordered. The Master-at-Arms reports to the Chief of Security. Gunner's Mate The Gunner's Mate trains and supervises Tactical crewmen in tactical operations, repairs, and protocols; maintains duty assignments for all Tactical personnel; supervises ordnance inventory, preparation, and deployment; and is qualifed to temporarily act as Chief Tactical Officer if so ordered. The Gunner's Mate reports to the Deputy of Tactical. Chief Science Officer The Chief Science Officer is responsible for all the scientific data the ship/facility collects, and the distribution of such data to specific section within the department for analysis. S/he is also responsible with providing the ship's captain with scientific information needed for command decisions. S/he also is a department head and a member of the Senior Staff and responsible for all the crew members in her/his department and duty rosters. Assistant Chief Science Officer The Asst. Chief Science Officer assists Chief in all areas, such as administration, and analysis of scientific data. The Asst. often take part in specific analysis of important data along with the Chief Science Officer, however spends most time overseeing current project and their section heads. Science Officer There are several general Science Officers aboard each vessel. They are assigned to their duties by the Chief Science Officer and his Assistant. Assignments include work for the Specialized Section heads, as well as duties for work been carried out by the Chief and Asst. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer, or the section head they are assigned to. Alien Anthropologist / Anthropologist Specialised Science Officer in charge of the Alien Culture Section. This role involves the study of all newly discovered alien species and life forms, from the long dead to thriving. There knowledge also involves current known alien species. Has close ties to the History Section. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Astrometrics/Stellar Cartography Officer Specialized Science Officer in charge of the Astrometrics Section. This role entails the maintaining, correction and production of new stellar maps. Has close ties with the the Physics and Stellar Cartographer Sections. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Biologist Specialised Science Officer in charge of the Biology Section. This role entails the study of biology, botany, zoology and many more Life Sciences. On larger ships there many be a number of Science Officers within this section, under the lead of the Biologist. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Historian Specialized Science Officer in charge of the History section. This role entails the detailed study of civilizations past histories, and there implication and involvement in the future development of cultures. Has close ties to the Alien Culture Section. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Language Specialist Specialized Science Officer in charge of the Linguistics section. This role involves the study of new and old languages and text in an attempt to better understand and interpret there meaning. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Physicist Specialized Science Officer in charge of the Physics Section. This role entails the study of mathematical calculations and there implication and viability on the natural physics of the universe. It also involves the study of the natural physics of the universe and attempts to decipher them. Has close ties with the Stellar Cartographer and Astrometrics Section. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Stellar Cartographer Specialized Science Officer in charge of the Stellar Cartographer bay. This role entails the study of all spatial phenomenon, and the implications of such phenomenon. Has close ties with the Physics and Astrometrics Section. Answers to the Chief and Asst. Science Officer. Scientist's Mate The Scientistıs Mate trains and supervises Science crewmen in departmental operations, repairs, and protocols; maintains duty assignments for all Science personnel; supervises all specimen preparation, cataloguing, and storage; and is qualified to temporarily act as Chief Science Officer if so ordered. The Scientistıs Mate reports to the Chief Science Officer. Return to Department Chief Counselor Because of their training in psychology, technically the ship's/facility's Counselor is considered part of Starfleet medical. The Counselor is responsible both for advising the CO in dealing with other people and races, and in helping crew members with personal, psychological, and emotional problems. The Chief Counselor is considered a member of the Senior Staff. S/he is responsible for the crew in his/her department. The Chief Counselor is the Counselor with the highest rank and most experience. Assistant Chief Counselor Because of their training in psychology, technically the ship's/facility's Counselor is considered part of Starfleet medical. The Counselor is responsible both for advising the CO in dealing with other people and races, and in helping crew members with personal, psychological, and emotional problems. The Assistant Chief Counselor has the ability to take over as Chief Counselor on a temporary or permanent basis if so needed. Counselor Because of their training in psychology, technically the ship's/facility's Counselor is considered part of Starfleet medical. The Counselor is responsible both for advising the CO in dealing with other people and races, and in helping crew members with personal, psychological, and emotional problems. Counselor's Aide The Counselor's Aide helps keep all the matters of the Counseling Department in order. S/he assigns appointments for anyone needing them, and assists the Counselors with anything that they may need. Detachment Commander The Detachment Commander is responsible for all the Marine personnel assigned to the ship/facility. S/he is in required to take command of any special ground operations and lease such actions with security. S/he also is a department head and a member of the Senior Staff. The Marines could be called the 24th century Commandos. Detachment Deputy Commander The Assistant, works like any Asst. Department head, removing some of the work load from the Detachment Commander and if the need arises taking on the role of Detachment Commander. S/he overseas the regular duties of the Marines, from regular drills to equipment training, assignment and supply request to the ship/facilities Materials Officer. Company Commander The Company Commander is responsible for all the Marine personnel assigned to his/her company. S/he is in required to take command of any special ground operations and lease such actions with security. Company Deputy Commander The Assistant, works like any Asst. Department head, removing some of the work load from the Company Commander and if the need arises taking on the role of Company Commander. Squad Leader Responsible for the welfare for all Marines NCO's under his/her command in that Squad. Required to lead and command the Squad in and out of Combat. Provide training for the Squad both physically and mentally. Maintain order and discipline. Reports to Platoon Leader. Position requires any Officer rank, or the NCO rate of Sergeant. Assistant Squad Leader Asst. to the Squad leader, responsible for overseeing the implementing of orders from the Squad Leader. May be held by any Marine NCO rate. Marine Sometimes referred to as the grunt. The backbone of the Marines, the field troops. Required to follow orders, and think oh his/her feet if needed. Answers to the Asst. Squad Leader. First Sergeant The First Sergeant is the highest ranked Enlisted marine. S/He is in charge of all of the marine enlisted affairs in the detachment. The First Sergeant can act as a Platoon, Company, or Detachment Commander as needed. The First Sergeant reports to the Marine Detachment Commander Marine Fighter Pilot Element Leader The senior flight officer. S/he is in charge of all things related to the ships Fighter Wing such as been responsible for all the personnel assigned to the department on the ship/facility, and assuring that maintenance work is carried on on the craft by Engineering. The Element Leader answers directly to the Detachment Commander and Detachment Deputy Commander. Assistant Marine Fighter Pilot Element Leader Assistant to the senior flight officer. S/he is in assists the Element Leader by overseeing all matters, such as personnel, maintenance and acquisition of supplies. The Asst. Element Leader answers directly to the Element Leader. Fighter Pilot Specialized pilot, trained in all areas of fighter combat. Also familiar with standard shuttles and runabouts. Answers to Element Leader. Bar/Lounge Manager On almost every Starfleet vessel and base, there is some kind of recreational area. A place where all members of the crew can relax and enjoy, a place to forget the rigours of the day. The Bar/Lounge Manger runs such establishments for the crew. Bartender A ship/facility is operational 24 hours a day, and thus people are on duty around the clock, each having there free time at different times, but the recreational areas must stay open to accommodate these people. A Bar/Lounge Manager could not keep going 24 hours every day, and thus requires staff to assist him/her. Water/Waitress Every bar, every restaurant needs some form of friendly service to help the crew relax. A warm smile who brings your food or drinks, to chat when somebody is alone or down. the Water/Waitress are theses people. School Teacher In the modern 24th century, many children are taught by computer holograms. However real interaction with a living person is still valued. A computer can only teach so much. The teachers responsibilities is the education of the children aboard the ship/facility. Additionally the teacher may be able to provide assistance in his/her field of specialty when required. Barber In the modern 24th century, many people still need to get hair cuts. This can be done by more, modern means, however real interaction with a living person is still valued. Besides, like the bartender, a barber is a good place to get advice, get something off your chest, or just talk about 'scuttlebutt' or gossip. Additionally the teacher may be able to provide assistance in his/her field of specialty when required. Civilian Specialist Many of the Federation's top minds and specialists in different fields aren't in Starfleet, they are civilians. These people often venture into space aboard Starships and other facilities. They maybe Doctors, Scientist, or even Engineers. They use some of the science labs, when possible, to do their work while not interfering in operations of the ship or facility. Starfleet's primary role is exploration, and having these people on board really helps that endeavor. Civilian Many federation Starships and facilities have civilian personnel aboard. This is because Starfleet believes that family is important and member of Starfleet should be allowed to stay with there loved ones whilst serving aboard there vessel and bases.
