| About Evergreen REACT Evergreen REACT was officially issued charter #2869 by REACT International, Inc. on October 20, 1975. Team members were almost immediately called to duty during the major flooding that devastated many areas of Snohomish County that winter. After the eruption of Mt. St. Helens on May 18, 1980, Evergreen REACT initiated a massive collection, and made delivery of donated materials and supplies for residents of the stricken area. The primary purpose of every REACT team is emergency communications - to monitor CB channel 9 for emergencies and motorist assistance. Many teams also participate in various community events and activities by providing on-scene radio communications between coordinators and event personnel. REACT teams are often requisted to assist their local emergency services agencies with communications during natural disasters and other types of community emergencies. Evergreen REACT frequently works with the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management, providing a work force and assisting with communications at their EmergencyOperations Center and in the field. Our General Membership Meetings are held the last Sunday of each month at Snohomish County Fire Dist #1 HQ in (South) Everett, WA. Evergreen REACT uses various types of radios in order to provide as fast and efficient communications as possible. These include Amateur, GMRS (UHF), and Citizens Band (CB). REACT teams also serve free coffee to motorists during round-the-clock "Safety Breaks" at highway rest areas. The purpose of these is to persuade drivers that have been on the road a while to pull over for some fresh air and caffeine. It also gives us the opportunity to distribute literature specifically directed towards safer highway travel, and to promote REACT and the usefuiness and convenience of channel 9. Evergreen REACT hosts Safety Breakes at rest areas on I-5 near Everett and Marysville, Washington when possible on holidays and other weekends when heavy traffic is expected. For several years, Evergreen REACT members have assisted the Skykomish Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service's Mt. Baker - Snoquaime National Forest with Spring and Fall campground clean-up weekends at the Troublesome Creek and San Juan Campgrounds near Index, WA. The hours work equate to about $5,000 in labor contributed annually. Since 1985 Evergreen REACT has assisted the Everett Parks and Recreation Department with theannual silver Lake Triathion. Our members porvide the radio communcitions from each stategically located checkpoint positioned throughout the race course, to Parks Department officials patrolling the course and at the start / finish line. Also in 1985, Evergreen REACT adopted a rest area on U.S. Highway 2 near Startup, WA. This rest area had been abandoned by the Washington State Department of Transportation due to lack of funds and personnel. Situated on the bank of the Wallace River, this small rest aera is realy more a community park after it was clean up. Our team members built a large picnic shelter to replace the structure that was torn down by vandals years earlier. Several large picnic tables have also been built. Area lumber yards and hardware stores donated much of the materials needed. WSDOT is now maintaining and improving this only rest area on U.S. Highway 2 between Everett and Wenatchee, WA. Evergreen REACT #2869, Inc. is registered with the IRS and the Washington's Secretary of State as a non-profit public benefit organization under 501(c)(3). |
