On The Road Again During the club's early days, like the 1980 Willie Nelson song, members were often seen on the road in places other than Dade County, and the below pictures are a good reminder of that!

The above photograph was taken during the 3rd Florida Touring Festival, October, 1977. At that time the now-luxurious Lakeside Inn (at the southern end of Donnelly Street, shown here) was still a boarded up building in it's original unrestored condition. Mount Dora was truly a one-light town in those days!

| The above photograph was taken at the start of a winter afternoon's ride in early 1978, at one of our favorite venues - the family homestead of Rene's near Miami-Dade Community College (now Miami-Dade College). From left are Mack, Janet, Rene', Gene and Jan. The club's bright orange jersies were a real eye-catcher, and made spotting club members very easy when driving along rural roads. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Taken on Loveland Road (S.W. 217 Avenue), January, 1978. Seen (from left) are Rene', Gene, Mack, Janet (holding the bag of gorp), Shelly and Jan. There's a story that goes with this ride - fortunately everyone made it home before midnight - and I mean midnight!

The above was taken during the Space Coast Freewheeler's invitational metric of the Kennedy Space Center, March, 1978. That's George (from a Coconut Grove pioneer family) on the left, changing his third flat of the day - fortunately Fletcher was on hand to supervise - he owned the "club's" bicycle shop at that time, and EBC members were often seen riding to or from his Hialeah store during the mid and late 1970's! Check those spokes, George!

The above photo was taken in 1978 on the road to Flamingo (that's Len on the left, with Bart wearing the old South Florida Wheelmen jersey). This particular road sign always made for at least one or two "ear popping" jokes! I must admit looking at this old photo (and the equipment used at that time) really brings home just how long ago these good times were, and how special they were to us all.

Taken during an overnight camping trip to Flamingo, Everglades National Park, November, 1978. That's Shelly (left) listening to a club member play the accordion (note the seagulls enjoying the music - perhaps they thought the sounds to be from relatives of theirs!). How that musical instrument (with case and stand) ever fit on a bicycle rack, I'll never know (a car trunk helps)! An unusual but good memory - being in the middle of the mangrove wilderness while listening to an accordian recital! Almost 24 hours after posting this photo the name of the woman playing the accordian finally came to me - Joan! Dusting off the old brain cells is hard work!

| The above photo was taken sometime in 1979 at a Martin County rest stop - which way to go? Also notice the "classic" Chevrolet in the background - not quite 10 years old at that time! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

'Though the above photograph may not win the Pulitzer Prize, the story that goes with it is worth mentioning - a group of EBC members were riding the very first Orlando Sentinel-Star Safari in April, 1980, when they happened upon on one of the legendary Florida cattle drives as it crossed a very rural county road north of Lake Okeechobee (note the vine-covered telephone pole - you won't see that in the city!). We don't know who was more surprised at this unlikely meeting - the cowboys, the cyclists, or the cows - I think we were!

After our encounter with the herd, we spent the night at the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation in Glades County, and Melody (dark shirt) and our group spent a day camped under the reservation's community field chickee's. In 1980, the Brighton reservation community was very poor and located in a very rural area of south-central Florida, however, our group of 250 or so were treated to a traditional Seminole dinner and breakfast despite the lack of resources - a very special memory.

This photograph was taken during one the EBC's many overnight visits to the Palm Bay/Melbourne area during the period 1979-1980. On this particular cold and cloudy day we were having lunch at the Grant Seafood Festival, in Grant (just outside Valkaria) - these were very small coastal communities at that time, and were representative of the "old" Florida. From left are, Len, Jan, Mack (in the orange hood), and Tom. On the right side of the picnic table (from closest to the camera) are, Dick, Jan, and a man who's name I can't recall, though he was one of Len's old friends from his Miami Springs Senior High days of the late 1960's. Tom (white hair) was one of the more interesting people we knew at that time. He and his wife lived in a beautiful beachfront home in southern Brevard County, and how we came to know him I can't recall, but, he was often a help to us when it came to knowing our way around the local roads. In addition, Dick (Jan's brother), moved from North Miami to set up a bicycle shop in a former frame house along the then-deserted S.W. Babcock Street in Palm Bay, and several times we made the drive up I-95 to camp overnight in his backyard. On one particular night a strong cold front blew through the area, and we ended up sleeping in his shop's showroom among the bicycles - a cyclist's dream!

This great photo was taken near the intersection of Hanlin Mill Drive and Farm Life Road (S.W. 216 Street and S.W. 162 Avenue) in the Spring of 1980. From left are Mo, Pete and man's name I can't recall! During those early days bicycle helmets were still an option for cyclists, but Mo decided that he'd wear his old Air Force crash helmet, just in case - it worked just fine, but a bit hot during the summer!

I must admit, the above is one of my favorite photos, taken in 1982, on the way south to Mount Dora. I was overflowing with vigor that week, and traveled from Hialeah to Ocala by Amtrak, and then cycled through the Ocala National Forest on the way to Lake County. Great memories!

And, last, but not least, is a photo taken in 1978 at the old Everglades National Park Visitor's Center - that's Rita (club member Dee's friend) toasting us at the end of another good overnight bicycle camping trip! Note the bus in the background - these are old photos, folks! There is a present-day connection to this photo - club member Rita lived next to the Darby's in the Westchester area of Dade County, and Mr. Darby at that time worked at the Hurricane Research Flight Facility (his young son, Evan, rode with the club, as well). Just last week (late July, 2004), Hurricane Darby formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean - and is named after Dad! People must think I make these stories up, but all of the above are true!
