1 1/4 C. each of bruised walnut husks and coarsely chopped leaves.
Soak them both in a gallon of spring water for 24 hrs.
Pour the water into a large saucepan and boil until the liquid is reduced by half the original amount. When it has cooled, strain and add 1 1/8 tbsp. of gin, bottle and store in a cupboard. A small amount would then be put on the hair daily with a sponge, wherever there is gray until a darker color only drawback to this is, what ever the dye touches, including the scalp, tuns somewhat dark as well.
You can make your own home-version of Grecian formula for taking away gray hair that's a lot safer to use, only contains natural ingredients.
In a heavy ceramic mixing bowl put 2 heaping tbsps. of dried sage and the same amount again of either orange pekoe or black tea. Then fill the bowl or jar half full of boiling water. Cover with a dinner plate or aluminum foil and place in a moderately warm (275 degrees) oven or in a large pan of boiling water on top of the stove on a low setting for at least a couple hours. Remove, allow to cool, stir well and strain.
Now a small quantity of this infusion is to be rubbed into the roots of the hair 4-5 times a week. Once the gray is the color you like, this infusion ought to be used just once or twice weekly for maintenance purposes only.
This infusion will keep longer if 3 tbsp. of either gin or rum are added to it.
(I do not know if this works. But you never know if you don't try.)
Hair that has become prematurely gray may often be restored to its natural color by a good sulphur hair massage. Sprinkle flowers of sulphur over the scalp and massage it into the skin. Do this fairly often to begin with, until the condition of the hair has improved. Then once a week will be sufficient to keep the hair in good health. Now this type of graying is do to improper diet.
