What to do with your Fanfiction.net Profile
By Alyson.

As someone with relatively little patience, I find it somewhat annoying when I have to scroll the page down for five minutes in order to get to the author's stories. However, that is not to say I am against any sort of profile. In fact I prefer when the author writes a little bit about themselves and gives me an idea of what sort of person they are. So I decided that an article about what to and not to put into your profile would be beneficial and make everyone's FF.net experience more enjoyable!

The GOLDEN RULE:
Never list any personal information on a profile, on any website, ever!
This includes last name, address, phone number, and even picture
(though this part is optional). And always be cautious when interacting with
people online.

Suggestions:

• General Favorites: These can include your favorite authors, books,
movies, genres, and other information relative to FF.net that will help
guide others before they read your stories. However, please refrain from
discussing more random favorites, such as your favorite makeup brand or
ice cream flavor.

Author's Note: Writing a brief author's note at the beginning of your
profile is great for informing other authors of any news that is
pertinent to FF.net. For example, I often write a brief A/N at the beginning
of my profile when I am undergoing a hiatus, or am inflicted by severe
writer's block. This lets other writers/readers know why my account is
inactive.

Quotes: If there are any particular quotes that speak to you
personally and that you would like to share with the rest of the FF.net
community, feel free to post them on your file. Just make sure you avoid
posting hundreds of them. However, among these, try to avoid posting quotes
that pertain to your personal life, since chances are, most people will
not understand the joke or significance. Save those types of quotes for
a blog or website.

Summarize: If you feel that the summary box that FF allows you to
describe your story was too short, or that you were unable to get the true
point across, you may wish to elaborate in your profile. This works
fine when you only have a few stories, but if you post more than 5 stories
on your site, I would not recommend this.

Extra Links: Have a blog, website, fictionpress.com account, a
MySpace, and a DeviantArt account? (Yes, I drew inspiration from myself.) If
you wish for other FF users to be able to access these things, then
posting these links in your profile is a great idea!

Hopefully, now you will be able to write a clean, concise and readable
profile for FF.net or any other profile you may fill out. I look
forward to learning about everyone (nothing personal though, right!?!)

Just a note from the MeBe girls - you'll find people do weird and wonderful things with their profiles and that different things annoy different people. If you really must post your favourite ice cream flavour as you're certain it will give a valuable insight into your character, go ahead. But, as with many aspects of FF, you might have to accept that some people just aren't interested :)
