INTRODUCTION

Beyond what we might think of as "cowboy culture and history" lies another dimension of history, no less important, which is explored through the stories of those who lived through and remember their own "hard times". It's the history of not only our "cowboy and country heritage" but of pioneers and immigrants, our forefathers and foremothers before us, living and working during a period of time in which the hardships of war, great depression and every day survival had to be endured on an almost daily basis.

With our own economic situations as they are in the world we live in today, we can't help but see the parallels drawn between our past and our future in these timely remembrances, which continue to teach and inspire us. Some of these stories are rife with nostalgia and hope, and in some you might see your own family history remembered through parents, grandparents or relatives who passed down their own stories to you.

Many of the authors of these stories have long-since passed from this life, but before they left, they passed on something of great value - they left us a lasting gift - that of their memories through storytelling.

I hope you all enjoy reading the stories in this new section entitled "Hard Times". You are cordially invited to submit your own special story to be published in this section of Cowboy Country Traveler.
