The USCF affiliated history of the club begins in 1974 with then 25 year old Craig Hines, serving as the affiliation officer. Craig had been a member of the club since 1967 when he was in High School.

Prior to 1974, players met at various locations to play casual games. Apparently, organized events in the form of rated tournaments did not exist locally.

In 1974, Craig ran Evansville's first USCF sanctioned rated tournament, drawing an attendance of 47 players - this number has not yet been surpassed for an adult open event. It was held at the Community Center.

The club was reorganized in 1987 after several years of rated tournament inactivity. The reorginazation, consisting of the resumption of local USCF rated events spurred an increase in both out of town/state participants and new members.

The first officers elected after the reorginazation were:
Terry Winchester, President
Randy Brockman, Vice-President
LeRoy Johnson, Secretary/Treasurer
Stan Roberts, Chief Tournament Director

Over the years, the club has been an over-the-board competitive entertainment spot for even a few well known local figures such as Superior Court Judge Scott Bowers and Mayor Russell G. Lloyd, Jr, both of whom are advanced players and have won club sponsored championship titles.

The club has also had its share of some very strong players, including USCF and FIDE Master Eugene Zelensky, of Russia, and Dr. Vernon Vix, a local Medical Doctor who also attained to the level of Expert. These people have been responsible for bringing in many out-of-town/state Masters, Experts and some very strong class A players to our tournaments.

Although we don't have all the information, It was brought to our attention, that the Evansville Northpark Chess Club took part in a Tribute to New York City. The event was held in the Old Courthouse. (more to come)
