Limp Bizkit - Significant Other (1999) WHY?: Hmm, I'll get the """TRENDY""" albums out of the way first. Is it so wrong for a fan of hardcore and other extreme metal types to like Limp Bizkit? IS IT?? Probably. But this was the first album that really got me into alternative stuff. It has a good mix of metal and hip-hop, wikky wow kaboom! Alot of the songs on here are true classics, and some of them actually show - GOSH!! SHOCK!! HORROR!! - emotion. Except I don't think Fred Durst has any. Well it's a great album anyway. WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT, HMM?: It was followed up by Chocolate Starfish & The Hotdog Flavored Water, which was waaaay too hip hoppy for my likings, Action Jackson, plus most of the songs were ruined by release on single (except for Boiler which was made better because of the awesome video). Significant Other is an almost perfect album, apart from the old annoyance of some songs being much better than others. BEST SONG?: Ooh, I would say "Don't Go Off Wandering" but that's debatable. BEST BIT?: Aaron Lewis of Staind doing something GOOD in "No Sex". Probably. The secret outro with Les Claypool is pretty funny.

KoRn - KoRn (1994) WHY?: Because it's a great album and KoRn will never be this good again. Back in 1994, KoRn were a bunch of young angry musicians with lots of pain and things and stuff. Now they are millionairres with porn star girlfriends and big cars. So there songs aren't as good. But every song on this album is awesome. Apart from "Daddy". But the end of that makes up for it. WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT, HMM?: Knowing that KoRn will never be this good again. Damn them. Oh, and their second album "Life Is Peachy" has some awesome songs on it too, some better than this album. But this album is very complete, "Life Is Peachy" is just a collection of songs. BEST SONG?: Tough choice. All of them are good. So I refuse to answer my own question. BEST BIT?: Again, unanswerable. I will pick out the guitar in "Clown" and the first 2 minutes or so of "Ball Tongue" as particularly special though.

Cradle Of Filth - Bitter Suites To Succubi (2001) WHY?: I haven't heard any other albums but this band, but this one rules. They mix Dani Filth's crazy vocals and grinding, 80s-esque guitar with smoooooooth keyboards and cellos and stuff. Which is great. I love this album. WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT, HMM?: I guess it's that the first 6 songs are awesome, but the rest don't really stand out much. But that doesn't matter when the rest are so cool. BEST SONG?: I like "All Hope In Eclipse" best, one of the reasons being that it talks about oral sex and you don't even notice ("A cruel tongue at work in her secret chamber" anybody?) BEST BIT?: The opening song "Sin Deep My Wicked Angel" has some awesome keyboarding. Or when Dani screams. Which is about once per song.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (1994) WHY?: Why? Have you heard this album? If you have, you won't need to know that it rules. But I will say it anyway. This album rules, it rules like a 30cm ruler that has been elected the ruler of rulers (tape measures included). Everything is sooooo good, one minute there's pouding drums, guitar, keyboards, and God knows what else, then the next there is a quite, sweet soundscape that is quite beautiful. If you've never heard Trent Reznor, then you should kick yourself in the face. Repeatedly. IN THE FACE. His 1999 album "The Fragile" was narrowly beaten out, but it's pretty much just as good as this. WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT, HMM?: Some songs are a little too long, and I don't like "Reptile" or "I Do Not Want This" very much. And it certainly draws from it's influences a little too often. BEST SONG?: I'd say "A Warm Place" but everybody else in the world would say "Hurt". Actually, I'd say "Hurt" too. "Hurt" it is. BEST BIT?: That would be "A Warm Place". Why isn't that song longer?!?!

Fear Factory - Demanufacture (1995) WHY?: Different from pretty much anything else you will hear. Kinda like a mix of Pantera and Frontline Assembly's best stuff. Plus, this is a concept album, all about machines taking over the world, and it makes sense. Like Nine Inch Nails, the album varies from intense drumming and guitars (which sound like machine guns) to soft pieces. Plus there's a cover of "Dog Day Sunrise" by Head Of David on there, and I have never heard of that band so Fear Factory must have boosted their sales a bit. WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT, HMM?: Some of the songs are a bit long. Did "A Therapy For Pain" really need about 3 minutes of windy sounds at the end? 1 minute or so would have done and finished off the album well. BEST SONG?: I like "Hunter-Killer", "Pisschrist" or "A Therapy For Pain" best, but they're all good. BEST BIT?: The effects are cool, like the metallica clangs and the chorus blares in "Flashpoint".

Converge - Jane Doe (2001) WHY?: Because this is just the most amazing album I have ever heard. From start to finish, it is just pure gob-smacking hardcore. This is a concept album too, y'know, all about the aftermath of a serious (like true-love-serious) relationship gone wrong. And it's obvious that Jacob Bannon (vocalist and writer) has gone through everything he sings about. It's POWERFUL, man. Stunning. WHAT'S BAD ABOUT IT, HMM?: A little too off mainstream for some people, people who think that it's "funny" or "not music". You people are fools, go back and listen to your Linkin Park and Hole albums. BEST SONG?: "Jane Doe" without a doubt. The only 12 minute song I know to be totally enthralling all the way through. BEST BIT?: The last 5 minutes of "Jane Doe". Woah. You have to hear this song. If you can't get the music, find the lyrics. Amazing.
