| Bicycles have come a long way since they were first invented. Many things have changed in bicycles since they were first invented in 1817. Ofcourse the basics are the same, frame, handlebar, 2 tires, seat, pedels and gears. But the bikes today come with many advanced and complex designs. Todays bikes have multiple gears, extralight frames, full suspension, rubber tires and much more. | - 1817 The Walking Machine: Baron van Drais invented a machine composed of a frame, two wheels and a front tire that turned. The machine was straddled while you walked with your feet to propel you down the path. The entire Walking Machine composed of wood. -1865 The Belocipede or Boneshaker: This bicycles was popelled by connecting pedals directly to the large front wheel. This was also made of complete wood, except later on when the addition of metal was usd for the wheels. -1870 The High Wheeled Bicycle: This bicycle used a very large front wheel with rubber tires. Like the previous bicycles it too used pedals dirrectly on the front wheel. However, because fo the hight of the bicycle many riders fell and tipped to the ground. -1890 The Hard-Tired Safety: This bicycles used a metal frame, chain and pedals much like to bike today. It also had rubber tires. Still the tire on the front was slightly larger than the one on the rear. -The Pneumatic-Tired Safety: The next big thing to happen with bicycles was a drive shaft design. After quite sometime the method was prooved useless and the production of these bicycles stopped. -1940's The Kids Bike: Soon after the war "classic " bicycles came in to existance. It followed many of the trends the automobile had gone through. They were elaburately designed and weighed at much as 60 pounds. -The Current Scene: Since the 70's we have gained alot of knowledge in frame design, frame materials and engineering for gears and suspension. Bicycles have certainly come a long way. |
