The purpose of the EU Association in Dubai is to promote the concept of the Europe Union in the UAE. This is being done on a cultural and social level. There is also a coordination sub-committee on education and schools, and a subcommittee on the Dubai Shopping Festival.
The EU association in Dubai is closely linked to its counterpart based in Brussels and called THE EUROPEANS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD (see weblinks).
The EU association in Dubai is chaired by Daphne Saccopoulos (GR). The President is Piet Bekaert (B). The committee members are: Gerda Mepelenbroeck (NL), Roger Wilkinson (GB) and Jean-Marie Hoffman (L). |

The story behind it: after having lived a few years in Dubai, Piet Bekaert, the ccoordinator of the Belgian Association, had sadly realized how the concept of "European Union citizenship" was totally absent in the city. In June 2001, he decided to create the European Association in Dubai. All the chair(wo)men of the different EU social clubs established in the city were called for a common meeting.
Since then, meetings of the members of this association have been organized on a 6 monthly basis.
A mailing list called europedbx was created, allowing to share relevant information (see underneath). |
