I'm not going to claim to be the most travelled guy around, but I've stayed at about 45 -50 hostels I definitely know my European hostels. Here are my top 5 overall: 1) Balmers Herberge, Interlaken Balmers is more like a backpackers resort. Catch the live djs in the metro bar 2 - 4 nights per week. The hostel bar here beats any other I've seen by a factor of 5. This place beats some nightclubs.. On your long european trip Balmers is like a combination between small town swiss charm and a good party. Plenty of things to do here, pricey as they may be. 2) Wombats, Vienna Womabts had the most inviting social scene I've come across. I met more people here in a short time than many other places. The hostel also had very clean rooms and enviorns 3) The Flying Pig, Amsterdam The pig has lots to offer. I have stayed in the downtown location twice and have good reports from both stays. The pig has a good bar and live djs. Happy hour is cheap and fun. Enter the drinking contest for your country. I had the Canadian flag on the wall for a day. My only real complaints of the pig are that 75% of the clientele were stoned out of their trees and that there was only one washroom for 50 people on the main floor loor 4) The Backpack Guesthouse, Budapest A bit hard to find, but once you get past that this place offers some good times. Nowhere have I seen backpackers bind faster. They have photo albums from all over the world, over 200 moies to choose from, good advice, and cheap beer. 5) The YoHo, Sazburg The bar was great, no expense spared here. The beer was cheaper before the Euro though. I suggest that you take advantage of the dinner they offer. HMs: The Instant Sleep, Hamburg; The Circus, Berlin; The Euro Youth Hotel, Munich; The Bauhaus, Brugge; The Station, Cologne, The Happy Inn Lodge, Interlaken

Top Mellow hostels: -The Backpack Guesthouse, Budapest see description above - Bobs Youth Hostel, Amsterdam - I don't give Bobs much, but I do give it high ratings as a mellow hostel. See description above. - The Station Hostel for Backpackers. Cologne - Very mellow, very cool, chill and have a Kolsch (very good, almost sweet, but in a good way beer) and mellow with poeple from all over. The same owners have another place about 15 min from the station. It's fine but has minimul backpacker ahtmoshere. Both hostels are well run.

I'm not out to bash anyone but here are my worst: 1) Omladinski, Zagreb (The only bad thing in Zagreb though, I suggest a hotel here) Gross, don't be fooled by the semi-clean entrance. The omladinski has refugees and bedmites. When we checked into our room the people in it were complaining about bug bites. I suppose the location deserves some credit but it doesen't save it from being my worst hostel ever. 2)The Hotel Biber, Zurich ( there were bums staying here) 3) Bobs Youth Hostel, Amsterdam (that smell, oh that smell) 4) The HI, Bern 5) Any other HI Hostel
