Day three: Arromanches   april 18 2003

This town Bayeux is so beautiful!! There are boulangers and patisseries on every corner or so, so many of them, and all the stores have living space directly above them. I just had the strongest urge to obtain a bike somehow and just bike through the whole town taking it all in. There's this cool cathedral in the middle of Bayeux, I hope we get to go there soon.
Breakfast was fun. We all got assigned table numbers, and our table didn't get to eat until near the end. We had a croissant with chocolate thing, and pieces of bread, and hot chocolate! I'm loving the hot chocolate here. As well, we had this cereal very similar to corn pops, and this yogourt that was actually Sugar Cane flavored [I thought it was vanilla for a while], and Shannon had a bright idea in pouring it over the cereal instead of milk cause the milk here is full milk, so there's a lot of cream in it. Such a good breakfast.
Today we went to the beach of Normandy. Actually, it's Arromanches, so I don't know if it's called the beaches of Normandy or not. There are cool cliffs there, and the town of Arromanches is like, right on the beach. And you could still see part of the fake harbor they built almost 60 years ago. That was cool. We went into this museum, and saw this cool pamoramic theatre-of-the-round type of movie. It was really good. Showed them landing on the beaches years ago, and what the beach looks like today as well. Today they're very pretty and peaceful. We took our first group pictures, and bought our first souvenirs. Fun stuff. We travelled down into the village, and to another museum all about the town during war. Then we were free to wander the village, yay! We bought lunch, a baguette with really strong cheese that we are now avoiding. We saw a creperie, but didn't go in, silly us. We just spent the time travelling the street, buying postcards and looking at souvenirs. After lunch, we all met up again, and were off to the American Cemetery, and therefore Omaha beach.
There were so many crosses there, it's amazing. But it was so peaceful and green. We found the only Canadian in the cemetery, and put a Canadian flag by his cross. It was funny, looking at all the American flags, then seeing a Canadian one. Shannon and I just wandered up and down the crosses taking it all in. It was so sad, but like I said, peaceful. We found Theodore Roosevelt Jr.'s gravesite, it was lined out in gold and said Medal of Honor on it. That was our visit to the American Cemetary.
Next stop, Pointe du Hoc, the highest part of the beaches and one of the most important to scale. It was riveted with holes, big craters and such. By this time we were a little bit tired so we just hung out in one of the big holes after taking a look around in the bunkers and such.
We ate dinner in the town of Bayeux compliments of our teachers, but in all honesty, our own money. We went shopping first, because the shops closed at 7 and then you ate. We bought souvenirs for relatives, but nothing for us. After trying to decide where to eat, we picked a little pizza place it looks like most of us ended up eating at. Here we ate with Murray and Matt and Jason, and Murray say the English Spocken sign. Ah, good memories. After dinner, we travelled down to the Cathedral, and it was actually called Notre Dame! It was cool. We then attempted to find the big tapistry that Bayeux is so fond of, but we couldn't find it.
We all regrouped, then walked back to the Auberge together. Practising for Paris I guess. I battled again with the ever annoying showers, then went to bed.
