Day seventeen: Jeanne D'Arc   may 2 2003

Today was a change of pace. It was our last day, but it was relaxed. Although I did have to write my english IB commentary exam today, but hey, at least I didn't have to write it in Switzerland like was originally planned. Today we just had to go to classes with our parters, so it's all good. I went with Aude to her first class, which was [eep] math. I actually understood a concept the teacher was talking about, and it was something we had never done in class. Weird. I couldn't explain it, but there was only one step that I didn't understand where she got a number from. We were all given work sheets, but Shannon and I couldn't figure out what to do on them, so we just doodled. She sketched. I had to leave 45 mins into the lesson to go write my wonderful exam, which lasted two hours and wasn't, all in all, too bad to write, then I had to find my way back to the same classroom as before and hang out with Shannon and Marie for a class of physics/chemistry. That was messed. The teacher was so scary, and she had no idea who I was when I walked into her classroom and sat down. She was giving me a look as if to say, and who are you? what are you doing walking into my class so late!!! get out! I just sat there. She was scary though. Apparently at one point when I was writing my exam, Mark Howell fell asleep, and she totally snapped on him. I saw her kick a student who had his legs stretched out in front of him, and I was shocked. See? Scary.
After the scaryness was over, and the weird bell went off, [it was a buzzing that lasted near a minute] we were free for the day! It was a half day, or something like that, and besides, it was lunch. Aude and I walked home from Jeanne D'Arc, fixed some lunch, and then listened to music. Her and Marie talked [I am amazed that Aude is nice enough to talk to Marie for my sake because of Shannon because Aude now hates Marie; last year, they were close friends], and decided that Marie and Shannon would come over and 'chill' for a while before Marie had to go off to the restaurant where our farewell banquet was taking place because she was involved with it. When she left, Shannon and I watched 'Guys and Girls', with Aude and her boyfriend, Arnaud, in english with french subtitles because he doesn't know much english. It was funny to see what they translated the english into, because of the slang and all. There was this one moment, with a song, that was translated so horribly. But yeah, the movie was good. Shannon and I were through with shopping. We just wanted to veg for our last day, to be energized for the night. After the movie, Shannon and I played foosball until we drove her home to get ready for the dance. We got driven in Vincent's convertible! It was so much fun. We even stopped somewhere just to get our picture taken inside the car. Good stuff. I totally got my hair blow dried right there.
Once we got back, I only had like fifteen minutes to get ready.. oh no. I changed [wore my new shirt!], put on some makeup, and france perfume. I was ready before Shannon and Marie [well her mom was driving] came and picked us up. I was kinda sad because I didn't really get any family pictures because we were rushed out the door. But I did give them the gifts I had gotten for them, and told Isa that anytime she was in Canada she should come and stay with us. She invited me back to their house if I ever come to France in the future. I'll totally take them up on that.
Everyone was dressed up prettily for our formal dinner. The dinner consisted of yummy celeri salad, cucumbers, and various other good salads; then we got to the main course. I almost gagged. Turns out the main course was giant shrimp. But they weren't peeled or anything. They were whole, attenae and eyes and feet and all; Shannon and I tried to eat around them, because there was chicken underneath the rice the shrimp were lying in, and that worked for a little while, until we came across the first squid octopus thing. It was green and had testicles. After coming across one digging through the rice, and it coming out on my fork, I couldn't eat anymore. Good ice tea though. And bread. The dessert was so good. It was a cake with strawberries, and it was fantastic.
We ate cake after we went through all of the speeches, and the films, and the gift giving. Everyone was called forward with their partners, and we were given.. a box. Turns out everyone got a scarf. And we got... a box. Interesting. I mean it; there was nothing inside. They were cool though, for keepsakes from our trip. And the back listed most of all the towns we went to on our trip; on the front was the Jeanne D'Arc crest, and my name and Aude's name. It was cool. I am worried about packing it though. I also got a J.D. crest badge, that's cool. The last thing we got was the poster that I do believe Dan made commemorating our trip. It's now on my wall. We took another round of pictures, with our scarves on. We ate cake, watched some breakdancing, then we walked to the discotheque for our last night.
It wasn't nearly as good as the first night, because at the first night it seemed that everyone was there. At this one, I couldn't help but notice missing people. And all the Mulhousiens I had become friends with weren't there. I had wanted to say goodbye to them. And the music was repetitive. But it was still better than sleeping. We stayed there until we had to go home to pick up Shannon and my bag; we didn't sleep that night. We thought it would be rather useless what with the flight at 4:45 am... once we walked back to my house, Aude went to bed, and Vincent drove Marie home. Although we could sleep on the plane, they had school on Saturdays. Then my trip-dad drove us to the airport half an hour or so away. We dozed in the car. He dropped us off, and I said goodbye to him and thanked him. Then we went to wait in the airport for our flight.
