After Neuschwanstein I left my UW friends to hitch-hike all the way to Padova, Italy. After about ten hours of free rides, much walking, and a short cheap train ride, I arrived in Padova, which is near Venice. I travelled at least 400 km that day. I had a couch to sleep on that night, which was pure luxury when compared to my most recent sleeping arrangements (rest stops on the Autobahn). I was well fed there and I was very happy! I spent five days in Padova visiting my friend Lorenza. We spent one day in Bologna with two of her friends. At one time a lot of the rich families in Bologna would each build a tower, mainly to see who could build the tallest one. The highest tower is the "Asinelli" tower (Asinelli was the name of the family, however it also means "donkey"!) which is 97 m high. We climbed the steps to the top for a view of the city.
Bologna is also filled with churches (not unlike many other Italian cities, I might add). In Bologna there is a string of seven churches all attached together, some of which can be seen here.
Whenever I am in Italy, I always seem to have terrific weather. On a sunny day in Padova, Lorenza and I went to a large ring surrounded by over seventy statues of some of the famous people to have lived or worked in the city.
Galileo Galilei did much of his work in Padova in this tower.
While in Padova we made a day trip to see Bologna. After my stay in Italy I left for Neuchatel, Switzerland. On the way there I stopped in Milano (for about three hours) to have a look at the magnificent Cathedrale.
