Teach yourself German
This is an excellent introductory book to the German language.  If you would like to learn enough German to be comfortable in a simple conversation or "advanced travel language", this is a great book.  It does leave out some key grammatical ideas, but for the price tag, you can't complain.

The perfect partner to the first book. It is an up to date introduction into German grammar that requires no previous knowledge. It is easy to use and very accessible. It explains even more difficult German grammar in small steps easy to follow
