They were expected to win the final, but Germany overpowered Hungary 3-2, and captured the title. The 1950-56 record, Hungary's only loss was in the finals, interesting enough Germany lost to Hungary in the group stages of the World Cup.
New records were achieved in this Cup held in Sweden. A French player named Juste Fontaine, in only six matches, scored a sum of 13 goals. But a more spectacular player was the Brazilian 17-year-old offencer Pele, scoring 6 goals and one of them was a hat-trick in the semi-final against France. In the final, Brazil beat the hosts Sweden 5-2 and two of those goals were scored by Pele. This was Brazil's first Championship, and a new dominance formed that would last the next 12 years.
The tournament was held in the South American country of Chile. Brazil lost Pele in the early rounds due to injury, but that did't stop them from beating Czechoslavakia 3-1 in the final and retaining their World title.
The World Cup tournament was held in the home of Soccer, in England. In a controversial final, England beat West Germany 3-2. England's third goal was disputed because the Russian linesmen judged it to have crossed the line.
Since color television was introduced, now color images were transmited live from Mexico, where the World Cup was held. Red and yellow cards and substitutions were used for the first time in the tournament. The final eight games of the tournament resulted in 34 goals. Brazil became the 3-time World Champion, when they beat Italy 4-1 in the final. Brazil was allowed to keep the Jules Rimet trophy for the achievement.
The Championship was held in West Germany. The Netherlands successeded in reaching the final, and the first ever penalty was held in a World Cup final. West Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the penalty kicks. Franz Beckenbauer, the German captain, was the first man to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy.
Argentina hosted this year's tournament. The hosts were a very good team, they beat Peru 6-0 in the 2nd phase group match. In the finals Argentina beat Holland 3-1 and won their first title.
The Spanish were the hosts of the World Cup, the total number of teams competing increased to 24 from 16. Italy won its 3rd World Cup by beating West Germany 3-1.
Due to Columbia's withdrawal from being hosts, Mexico was holding the tournament for the second time. Diego Maradonna of Argentina was a very dominant player in this tournament. Diego is most remembered for his 2 goals that knocked out England out of the World Cup in the quarter-final stage. Argentina beat Belgium with 2 goals in the semifinal and moved on to the final. The Argentinians beat West Germany in the final 3-2 to become the new World Champions. Maradonna scored awesome 2 goals that took out England out of the tournament. In the semifinal Argentina beat Belgium 2-0. The Argentininas met the Germans in the final and won their second World Cup with a 3-2.
