Belgium - Information.

December 1996 - Bruges, on the way back from the Rhine Valley (See 'Germany').

Strange Happenings: Prices in Bruges Town Square - £45 for a plate of chips and a beer!

Travel Advice and Information: Bruges is an expensive place and it is recommended that you do not eat in a restaurant on the old town square.   That said, Bruges is worth a couple of days of anyone's time and is a very pretty place.

I can't advise about other places in Belgium cause I don't know much about it.   I do understand Brussels is worth a visit.

Weather: Temperate conditions with rain likely any time of year.   Small chance of snow in winter.   Temperatures range from around about 5°C in the winter to the mid-twenties in the summer.

Travel Companies: Most major companies (especially coach operators) travel to Belgium.   Bruges is considered a short stay option or somewhere to drop off on the way back from somewhere else.   ('Travel Links').

Currency: Euro (Belgian Franc prior to 2002).

Beer and Beverages: Large variety of beers to try, especially in the Flemish part of Belgium.   Some of them are actually 'beer', rather than lager.   You might want to try the Confederation of Belgian Breweries, for a bit more information.

The Wolloon part of Belgium seems to be less interested in beer and more interested in wine.

Language: Flemish is spoken in the north and west, French in the Wolloon areas in the south and east.   Some German is spoken along the border with Germany.   Brussels is mixed, mainly French speaking.   Also, some Flemish seem to be very good at learning languages and English is understood by many, also sometimes German.

Religion: Many do not actively follow religion, though the main Christian denominations are followed.   The Wolloons tend to follow Catholicism.
