| One of the most influential political and military leaders in history, Gaius Julius Caesar helped establish the vast empire ruled by Rome. Caesar's truiumph in a civil war in the 40's BC made him the absolute ruler of Rome. But political jealousies among his opponets motivated them to assassinate him. Julius Caesar was murdered by a group of senators on March 15 in 44 BC. The story of the assassination has become the subject of many plays and works of art like this one by Italian Vincenzo Camucchi. Julius Caesar was born into the prestigious Julian clan in Rome on the 12th or 13 of July in 100 BC. His uncle by marriage was Gaius Marius, the leader of the Populares. The last year his uncle held office he exacted a terrifying toll on the opimateds. At the same time, he made it so that young Caesar was appointed. Through the many years of triumphs and losses the opinion of Caesars accompishments is divided. Some declared him a great tyrant, but others thought he had an insatiable lust for power, and blame him for the demise of the Roman Republic. Others admitted he was ruthless but insisted the empire was not destroyed because of him. Although many did not like him, among ancient military commanders, he may be secound only to Alexander the Great |
