Biography

I am an equal opportunist. Please respect my office hours. If they are not accommodating, first send questions to eujin [dot] teoh [at] ieee [dot] org
For non-essential communication, I can be reached at eujinteoh [at] yahoo [dot] com
Or eujinteoh [at] msn [dot] com

If the response does not suffice then make an appointment with me via email. My office is located at the Control and Simulation Laboratory, E4A-03-04 (Tel. No.: 6874-5252).
I'm joking. Really.

I am a PhD. candidate (expected graduation: 2007/2008) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering . I am at present, a recipient of the NUS Research Scholarship as well as the President's Graduate Fellowship (one of 40 students in the university). My PhD. advisors are Prof. TAN, Kay Chen and Prof. XIANG, Cheng . I graduated from NUS in July 2004 with a degree in Electrical Engineering (1st Class Honours, Summa cum Laude), with a Minor option in Management in Information Technology as well as a certificate for the Talent Development Programme (TDP, now known as the University Scholars' Programme or USP). I was awarded the IEEE Control Chapter Prize for having the best (or at least one of the best) honours (senior, or final-year) project - I was also placed on the Vice-Chancellor's List (one of two students) during the commencement proceedings. Throughout my undergraduate years, I was also placed on the Dean's List.

Current GPA/CAP: 5.0/5.0
Previous coursework: Servo engineering & Multiprocessor systems
Current coursework: Neural networks & Evolutionary computation
Present research focus: Pattern classification as an inverse problem, Optimizing recurrent neural network structures and parameters with evolutionary computation approaches
Research areas: Machine learning theory (statistical, computational, information-theoretic), Computational neuroscience

My research interests, though diverse and have mostly been yet to be defined, are in the area of neural networks and computational intelligence - particularly in the domain of neural computation, and machine learning. Currently I'm interested in information theoretical aspects of learning (this supersedes my earlier interest in statistical learning theory).

Brief curriculum vitae (pdf).

Much of my side interests revolve around photography and traveling (to exotic places to do weird things) - aside from the traditional fare of reading and writing. I used to street skate until I was hurt (as well as a wane in interest). I also enjoy playing whatever crummy pieces I can on the guitar/organ. Tennis used to be my first love until I realized that not many people whom I know are able to hit a tennis ball. No offence - and hope none is taken.:=)

Some of my photography can be found on the web - right now I only have the pictures taken during my trip to India (I call it my very own Indian Summer) in May-June 2004. The web host is at Webshots Community.

I am from Johor Bahru, Malaysia and have been studying in Singapore since my junior college days (which seems like eons ago) under the ASEAN Pre-University scholarship. In NUS as an electrical engineering undergraduate, I was also under the NUS ASEAN Undergraduate scholarship.

Currently, I have a lot of unresolved issues (mostly of my own doing). I make mountains out of molehills (and anthills, occasionally). I'm moody, eccentric, volatile and unpredictable. Throw in laziness and lack of motivation, and the package's complete. Almost. I have this dry sense of humour (otherwise known as British).

I like trying different things, mostly stuff that puts me at risk (life and limb). With the exception of the opium-laced lassi in Agra, India. Wished I had tried that. Or the bag made of hemp in San Francisco. Darn.
