THE HOLY TRINITY

“The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead.”

Trinity is the heart of the Christian view of God. It is a mystery which man cannot comprehend with his intelligence.

There are two essential factors in the mystery of Trinity:

  • The unity of the divine essence and

  • The reality of the personal distinctions within the essence

All human examples either explain the first or the second element but cannot explain both at the same time.

Biblical Basis:

  • Baptism of Jesus in Matt. 3:13-17, we see that Trinity at work.

  • The baptismal formula in Matt. 28:19

  • The benediction in II Cor. 13:14

  • In the creation story itself, we find God, His Word, and His Spirit are brought together.

  • Apostle’s preaching and teaching (Acts 2:32,33; I Pet. 1:2)

The Trinity acting in Unity:

  • In Creation             (Gen. 1:3;         John 1:1;          Job. 26:12,13)

  • In the Incarnation    (John 3:16;       Luke 2:11;        Luke 1:35)

  • In Redemption        (Heb. 9:14)

  • In Prayer                (John 16:23;     Rom. 8:26)

  • In Glory                  (1 Cor. 2:4;      Phil. 3:21;         Rev. 22:17)

  • In Regeneration       (Luke 10:20;    Eph. 1:7;          John 3:3-6)

The Trinity and the attributes of God:

  • Eternal                   (Ps. 90:2;         Rev. 1:8;          Heb. 9:14)

  • Omnipotent            (I Pet. 1:5;        II Cor. 12:9;     Rom. 15:19)

  • Omniscient             (Jer. 17:10;       Rev. 2:23;        I Cor. 2:11)

  • Omnipresent           (Jer. 23:24;       Matt. 18:20;     Ps. 139:7)

  • Holiness                 (Rev. 15:4;       Acts: 3:14;        Luke 1:15)

  • Truth                     (John 7:28;        John 14:6;       I John 5:6)

  • Communion            (I John 1:3;       II Cor. 13:14)

We believe :

God is one Being, but He exists in three persons.

  • In His nature and character He is one and this cannot be divided or separated.

  • In this divine being there are three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Man is an uni-personal being, while God is a tri-personal being.

  • The whole undivided essence of God belongs equally to each of the three persons. (Unity in diversity; Equality in dignity; Diversity in operation)

The Misconceptions:

  • There is one God who generated the other gods.

  • There is one person, who manifested himself in three forms. (Sabelliunism)

  • There are three Gods who are in one “Family”

  • There are three persons with variation in divinity and independence. (Arianism)

Conclusion:

  • Let us worship this great God

  • Let us not be troubled, if we don’t understand this perplexing doctrine.

  • Let us remember that the departure from the doctrine of the Trinity has been and is one of the major sources of heresy in the Christian church.
