2006 Potager Master Plan
My 2006 P-patch design is a
celebration of what I call the

American Potager

Utilizing flowers with old fashioned flair and enough vegetables to satisfy my family of one, my goal is to provide myself and my visitors an example of how a 400 square foot garden can practice integrated pest management (IPM), maintain a lush appearance throughout the seasons, build and maintain the soil and, most of all, provide myself with a venue for expressing art and gardening in one project.
This 20 foot row of snap peas will provide both food and privacy.  They will also mask the lily foliage following their bloom. Centered in the bed is a tree rose with a red lettuce and blue lobelia groundcover.
The Southeast entry established (blue barrel is now gone)
This view of the Southwest side of the plot has established the berm for planting root crops, separated by chives, followed by bush beans. One big, bold leek and parsnips from last year will be allowed to flower and self-sow.  I believe that the more generations of open polinated crops that are allowed to propagate, the more aclimated my plants will be to their particular microclimate. The perimeter holds mini-roses and staggard broccoli and red sails lettuce.  This area will be followed by a summer planting of determinate tomatoes and basil.  The deep circular path allows room to sheet compost weeds and spent crops.  The hollow bricks will hold alysum and lobelia.
