Bands are everywhere in the Philippines!  Included in what is categorized as OPM (Original Pilipino Music), rock bands and artists have made their presence known to the local music industry while continuing to leave their mark.  This is a wonderful time in OPM and it's a pleasure to listen to the radio.

As recent as a few years ago, Filipinos didn't have as many acts as they enjoy today, and it could even be said that there was too much of the usual pop acts, cute novelty songs, boy and girl groups and balladeers.  Or in other words, too much
patweetums going on.  At the time, there were many bands continuing to grow and establish themselves, but they were doing this "underground."

But today, bands are everywhere, on the radio, in the shopping malls, blaring out of jeepneys and even their songs being used in Filipino television shows. They even use Filipino hit rock songs as theme songs for Filipino or foreign-but-dubbed soaps and shows.   The standards have risen because of the high level of talent being displayed everywhere you go, even as far as fooling their own countrymen into thinking that the new song that they enjoy and are humming to is by a foreign band...that is until their albums, music videos and live performances reveal that they are indeed native children of the Philippine Islands.

Even as Filipino artists continue to show their creativity along with their Filipino and outside influences in the music produced, the final product produced still sounds Filipino.  The songs still have the Filipino character approach in song, a rich sound of old heartfelt barrio hispano-filipino/harana/ballad/filipiniana roots with strong hooks of laidback simplicity and even native influences that touch the listener both in the ears and the heart.  We must also remember that this new era of bands is carrying on what previous Filipino rock bands of earlier eras have provided us with.   But when you listen to the work produced by these new bands, it sounds distinctly Filipino.
