Articles/Text Submissions

Word count
The word count for feature articles is between 1500 and 3000 words. sections can run to a maximum of 1700 words. These figures need to be adjusted if photos or graphics are included.

References
We use the APA sysytem of referencing for our articles.

File types
Please send submissions by mail attachment to the editors saved as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file. This allows specialized formatting to be retained while ensuring that it can be read by any word processing software.

Punctuation
Please use only one space after punctuation. Double spaces create unusual text spacing in magazine typesetting.

Tabs
Avoid using tabs unless you are doing a chart. Paragraph indentations automatically set by DTP software and tabs set at the beginning of a paragraph upset the flow of text. Please do not use tabs as a substitute for a hard return.

Paragraphs
Please do not tab to a new line or paragraph instead of using a hard return. Put an extra line between paragraphs as this helps with layout.

Subheads
Please type all subheads in upper lower case (i.e., as in this document). Don't start articles with a subhead such as Introduction or Abstract.

Bio details
Please give some brief bio details, such which school, college or part of Japan you work in, and if appropriate, any books you have written. You may, if you wish, also include an e-mail contact address.

Text submissions
Please submit all articles to the editors at
[email protected]
If possible do not send large artwork or graphics files to this address as the storage capacity is limited. See below for artwork submissions.

Submitting artwork
We strongly encourage writers to include artwork with their text submissions whenever possible. Although we do have a clipart libraries available, this is often less satisfactory than photographs or specialised illustrations.

Placement
Please indicate in the body of  the text if there is a special placement of a photo, graphic or chart. It is best to make a note identifying the photo/graphic/art and indicating placement in a new paragraph with a return above and below.

Photographs
Well-lit, contrasty photos tend to scan better. If you are taking photos indoors, use higher speed films with a strong strobe. Make sure you do not write on the back of photos as this shows up when scanned.

Submission of artwork
1) Electronic submission
Please send artwork directly to the designer at [email protected]
Make sure that "ETJ Journal" your name are included in the subject line of the e-mail. Please advise the editors when you are sending artwork, so that we can acknowledge receipt. Where at all possible, please avoid sending artwork to the editors as storage space on the e-mail account is limited.

2) Mail submission
Please contact the editors if you wish to mail artwork before sending.
