Ethiopia, in NE Africa Welcome to our modest little site about a trip to Ethiopia we took in January & February 2004. Most pages consist of half a dozen or so captioned photos, plus some minimal background information. (For more info on Ethiopia, past and present, please refer to some of the recommended websites listed at the bottom of this homepage.)

Hope you enjoy some of these pics. Thanks for visiting!

Map of Ethiopia, from Encyclopaedia Britannica
Addis Ababa: Or new flower; its charms are well-hidden, but the capital has some great museums (recommended) and we were lucky enough to see Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations there.

Axum: Site of a thriving civiliation, dating back to at least the 1st century AD, its very impressive architectural achievements (obelisks/stelae) still on view and in very good condition.

Bahir Dar: Located on the southern edge of Lake Tana, the largest of Ethiopia's Rift Valley lakes, Bahir Dar is a great place to see wildlife (birds, hippos), visit nearby island monasteries, and just relax. A nice, colorful open market, too.

Bale Mountain area trekking: Find out about trekking, living & bee-keeping in the Afro-Alpine forest, 10,000' above sea level.

Gonder: A quick tour through "Ethiopia's Camelot," including 17th-Century palaces in the Royal Enclosure, plus Fasiladas' Bath and the beautifully adorned Debre Berhan Selassie Church.

Lalibela: 1,300 years ago they did things the hard way: Lalibela's rock-hewn churches make Petra & Kapadokya look easy. Click here and be suitably impressed.
