When Life Nears Its' End . . .
Who Decides?
93 year old Mr C has been living in a nursing home for 6 years.  His daughter who lives a few miles away has Power of Attorney and handles his affairs.  He has a living will in place that defines his desire for a Do Not Resusitate order - comfort measures only.
Mr C has several medical conditions.  His comorbidity includes:
MI with CABG, COPD, Chronic Renal Failure & Dementia along with several other conditions.

The Nursing Home staff felt uncomfortable with his dire condition and called the ambulance in hopes that the hospital could make him more comfortable.Mr. C arrives in the Emergency Department by ambulance and his condition is dire.  He is dehydrated and in renal failure.  His breathing is labored and congested.  He is diagnosed with aspiration pnuemonia.

Remembering the ABCS, of CPR it is clear that without intubation Mr. C will most likely die today.

Mr C.'s daughter arrives.  She recinds the DNR order and requests that her father recieve all measures to maintain life.
