How Many Hours Should a Nurse Work?
Janice is hired to work 36 hours a week.  She is a single parent of 3 children whose mother cares for her children while she works nights in the hospital. She is scheduled to work three 12 hour shifts a week.  She believes that working longer shifts allows her extra days off, and tries to group her shifts to give her extended days in a row off to help her "recover to have quality time".  She often notes that after 8 hours she is more tried and not functioning as well as she may have been but she is there to work her hours.  Additionally the hospital often calls her to cover for "holes in the schedule" by coming in 4 hours early.  While she is hired to work 36 hours a week, she generally works one twelve hour shift, two 16 hour shifts and one 8 hour shift a week.
