our fault

a boy shot up the school today
he made an awful mess they say
and everyone just stood around
spilling their blood on the ground
and mr. police man just frowned
a-askin everyone around
"Susie Jane what did you see?"
and when the turn was turned to me
I told them what I saw that day
I saw a boy's life fall away
and in its place a body lay
and now its blamed on my decay
It should be blamed on you and you
and you know in your heart i'm true
and when he turned his head away
he cried and sighed and said okay
but in his heart I know he knew
that I meant him and I meant you
and I meant me and I meant the
old boys and girls who torment he
who left his soul at home that day
and when he died it fell away
and then he asked again of me
"Again, young man, what did you see?"
and I replied in my clear way
"A boy shot up my school today."
and he just looked again and sighed
and turned his head and cried and cried
and when he turned again to we
he asked, "Now just what did you see?"
and we kept saying through and through
that it was our fault, me and you
and that warm night we went to sleep
not winding down or counting sheep
for that one night we knew inside
because of us a boy had died
and then he got his gun and made
the entire world indeed afraid
afraid of what, we still don't know
and when this boy has ceased to grow
he may one day forget his crime
