For the Love of a Child
By April Diaz
My friend
He weeps in silence
For love of kin and blood
A seed planted two years past
Rare in his wanting arms
Justice keeps the blossom far
In a place visited, not as often liked
In bottles piled
A cellar dark
There the heart he hides
Then slipped up once
By the silence of a listening ear
Without the salvation of the nicotine stick to grasp
He broke
A bottle tumbled from the wall
His heart poured from the shattered glass
Then dripped down a tender cheek
Ive a son of two
Taken away
My regret piles into an unknown strength
One day, my friend
You will understand
If you are forbidden to wake
Every morn without your life
The cherub you have made
In his bed
Morrow I go
To make whats right
And give my life to worth
He may take all of me
I submit to him
And take me into his light
I am a fortunate man
To be able to grasp
A single chance once again
Ill make our lives right
Ill take away fright
Kiss him goodnight
I want to be a good dad.
He wiped away another tear
Let loose another choke
And for a moment lay pride to rest
Im glad he was born to be my own.
So here I sit to think of last night
And hope if ever I be
That Ill be half the parent he is
To a son of my own
And cherish life
And every moment
That child would give to me.
