| Born Into Servitude - A Players Guide to Revenants
Fall, We'll hit, We'll break It brings me down To what, you want But me, I am The one to break I cant breathe out You scream - Find yourself respect - "Breathe Out", Nothingface Wrong Place, Wrong Time ? "You knowthey say that when pushed hard enough the mind bends and bends to avoid breaking. Leaves me wondering just how far it can bend before finally snapping. Especially after the past few days Ive had. Well, to be honest, Ive lost track of time long ago... but it feels like a few days. At least four or five. Anyway, that doesnt explain my situation so let me continue. Stop interrupting me! Right. So my name is Ashleigh Monaghan, I own a spa and health club at the corner of Elm and Main street. Small place.. no? Never heard of it? Well then shut up and sit there and let me talk." Clearing her throat, the young businesswoman looks around her pitch black room. She shivers again as she hears the sounds of rats squeaking and scurrying around. "I was out with my boyfriend of three months, Adam, and we were checking out the city when we ended up in one of the less than savory areas of town... What now? Oh hush. We were not asking for trouble. Just took a wrong turn. As I was saying, we took a wrong turn and thats when it happened. A body struck the car and actually knocked it over, causing it to tip over onto the drivers side. I was terrified and when I finally recovered I looked over and saw that Adam had smashed his head into his window. I tried to get him to respond to me, but he wasnt moving. Didnt even seem to breathe. I knew I had to get some help and right then and there, so I forced my door open and managed to climb out of that damn hunk of metal. Thats when I saw the thing that would damn me." There is a loud bang on the metal door of the room. "Shut the fuck up in there, goddam it! You want me to send in mah dogs again?!" Shivering at the mere sound of the mans voice, she yelps and scurries into a corner, knocking aside a rat in the process. Huddling up, she involuntarily strokes the bites and cuts the dogs left on her the last time he let them in. With a snort, the man moves away, his boots clomping loudly on the floor outside her room. After a little longer, there is the sound of the basement door closing, leaving her once more in the dark. "Whats that?" she asks in a quiet voice. "He said to be quiet. Dont be making so much noise. Huh? Oh. What did I see? Yeah, that. Well there was this really big guy. A really handsome guy at that. His face... was so... perfect. Just looking at him I almost swooned, but there were two problems. One, he had fangs and two, he had these weird bone looking thingies coming out of his knuckles. Laying where he knocked the car over, was a half unconscious looking guy... well I think it was a guy. I couldnt tell to be honest. His body was covered in like these weird hive looking things. Reminds me of a leper now that I think about it... well anyways thats what I saw. There was... another guy there... but I dont wanna talk about him. The handsome guy with the spikes grabbed the leper looking guy, picked him up and bit him. Next thing I know the leper guy turns into dust. I couldnt help it. I screamed. I screamed, got myself outta the car and ran for it. But I didnt get too far. The fanged guy caught me. He... he said I was a witness and had to die. But he was going to give me to his pet to play with before I died..." She sniffles loudly as the memories come back to her. "A goddamn toy... Thats what Ive been for days. He has beat me, whipped me, made me do demeaning things... No I dont wanna talk about that hes raped me, cut me... and you know whats sad? The worst thing of it all? I dont mind. None of that hurts as badly as the hunger. Hes only fed me and let me drink enough to keep me alive. Thats so much worse than anything else. Torture... rape... its all temporary and it eventually stops hurting. Not so with hunger. It just gnaws and gnaws at you, feeling like its eating you alive from the inside out, like that thing in that movie with the alien in it. And the worst part is, this bastard... he enjoys it all. I can see it in his eyes. Its like a cat playing with a mouse before killing it. Hes enjoying every last thing that hes done to me. I ha..." Before she can finish speaking, the door is yanked open, the painful lighting searing her eyes and forcing her to cover them. The man grabs her and yanks her to her feet, chuckling. "C'mon bitch. Time to get rid of ya." At those words, Ashleigh begins to cry hysterically, trying to kick and hit at the large man. With a laugh, he slaps her, a powerful hit that sends her world spinning as he quickly ties her hands with a rope. "My mastah said to dispose of you'se so I gotta do what he says. But Im gonna get one last game outta ya." With a booming laugh, he tosses her over his shoulder and carries her half unconscious out to his pick up truck, dumping her in the back. Falling inside the bed of the pick up, her head slams into the metal and suddenly her world is only darkness. "Wake up, girlie. Its play time." The man says with a slight chuckle. Barely woken up from her dazed state, she is quickly picked up and dumped to the hard dirt floor. Crying out in pain, she tries to turn over so that she doesnt have to be face down on the dirt, but his boot forces her face into the ground. He only grins at her cries of anger, pain and fear before speaking. "The mastah said Gregori, you be a good boy and dispose of dat girl. I says I like her. She screams really pretty like and thats I wantsta keep her. So he slaps me and says dont back talks to me. You be a servant like you'se is supposed to and get rid of her and maybe I wont beats you for back talking at me. So thats what Im gonna hafta do. Sorry lady, I really do like how you scream but you gotsta die. So were gonna play a game we Bratovitch love to play. Its called Deer Hunt." As he talks, she realizes that her hands have been freed from the rope and while in horrible pain, she can move them again. "Youre gonna run. And if I catch ya, Im gonna gut ya and skin ya." He snickers a bit and removes his boot from her head. "Id start running if I was ya." And indeed she does, getting up and running as fast as her aching, sore, sleep and food deprived body was willing to move. Stumbling for the third time, she whimpers as her foot gets tangled in a thornbush. "Ow... fuck that hurts." With a cry of frustration she yanks her foot free and starts running again, leaving her sock, torn to shreds now, in the bush. As she continues to move through the dense forested area he took her to, she cant help but think this whole situation over. This whole situation is totally goddamn nuts. How insane is that man? And his so called "master" is even worse! They have to be to do something like this to another human being. Its insane. Totally goddamn insane. As her foot comes down she suddenly cries out in horrible agony and falls to the floor. Looking down, she can see that her foot has been caught in a bear trap that is cutting deeply into her skin and possibly even a bit of bone. Biting her lip to stop herself from crying out continuously at the sheer immense pain of it, she reaches down trying to force the trap off her ankle. Pushing at it, she barely even gets it to move before it snaps shut again, cutting even deeper. Unable to hold back, she cries out again and falls back to the floor. Writhing in pain, she tries to crawl away. Pulling herself a bit, she yelps as a the chain on the bear trap wont go any farther, apparently latched to a small nearly hidden peg, none too far away. Starting to cry at the helplessness of this situation, she rolls over and looks up at the night sky, only to see the man looming over her. "Well, looks like you were caught girlie. Guess that means this game hasta end. Sorry. You were a good lil toy but now Ill just feed the dogs." With a loud whistle the two dogs that he has been breeding for his master slowly make their way out of the bushes near to where she was caught. Looking to the dogs he grins. "Foods served. Eat up." With that simple command, the night sky is filled with Ashleigh Monaghans final cries and screams. A week later, Adam, Ashleighs boyfriend, is sitting at his home in one of the nicer parts of town, relaxing after finally being released from the hospital receiving a clean bill of health. Reading his newspaper, he chuckles a bit, seeing the article in front of him. His phone begins to ring disturbing him from his quiet time. Walking over to it, he picks up the receiver and speaks."Hello?" "Heya bucko." "Bloody hell, Gregori. How many times must I tell you not to call me here?" The man on the other end of the line snickers loudly and obnoxiously. "Just wanted to thank ya for dat purty girlie. She was real fun. Ill have my boys bring over the shipment you asked for anytime you like." Adam smiles a bit. "Very well. Thank you." He hangs up without waiting for an answer. Its demeaning for a Grimaldi to have to work with one of those animals but one must do what one must do to serve our masters. Sighing a bit, he goes back to his paper, reminding himself to send a card to Ashleighs family. Mustnt seem monstrous or uncouth... He smirks at the thought, sitting down to enjoy another glass of wine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inhuman monsters bred to serve inhuman monsters, revenants are what they themselves would like to think of as the next step in human evolution. Something more human than a vampire, but more vampire than a mortal or even a ghoul, they walk a line between the worlds of the light and the hidden world where the dangerous Jyhad takes place. Bred through centuries of experimentation and inbreeding, these once mortal families have cast aside most of their former humanity to become something more than humanity at large. Insular and self contained, most of these creatures live their lives trying to avoid humanity at large, seeing it as worthless and weak, suitable only as prety to their vampire masters. However some few do seem to take a perverse pleasure in playing with the Kine and searching for suitable toys. This leaves them at a slight disadvantage when dealing with humans as they find it harder to empathize. Their standing within their own family and the vampires they serve tends to only make them less human and more vicious. Failure to a master is treated harshly, with a gentle punishment being the reshaping of the failed revenant into a grotesque Szlachta servant with a horrendous failure possibly leading to the deaths of friends, parents, brethern and then lastly the revenant being punished. Even failures to your parents can be punishments most humans would think inhumane but seems perfectly fine to these less than humane creatures. An A student gets a B+ on his report card will likely not be attending private school while his whip marks and burn marks heal so as to avoid... uncomfortable questions. With large families and influence that can sometimes make their masters pale in comparison, these beings are born walking the fine line that few dare tread with only two choices: succeed and be rewarded or to fail and die. Blood mages to almost the last, and unparallelled with their knowledge of machinery, these rare and horridly inbred servants of the Warlocks have grown quite far from their humanity, some would say even farther than the Bratovich... truly a feat. Sabbat Bratovitch - Animal breeders and inhuman monsters, the Bratovich have always been the dog soldiers of the Tzimisce. Expendable and full of a rage to make a Brujah blush, the Bratovich are among the most inhuman of all their kind. They have little, if any of the morals and understanding most humans have. They are renowned for their survival skills however. Grimaldi - Powerful and influential, the Grimaldi are rumored to be one of the first revenant families bred into existence. Once mercenaries and merchants, their influence has expanded now they do the Sabbats hush work carrying on a private masquerade of sorts for their draconian creators. However, they worry their days of usefulness may be nearing an end and they have pondered selling their services to another master. Obertus - Created to serve the Tzimisce in their monastaries and libraries, these obsessive mad scientists and scholars have long served as a font of knowledge for their masters. They have a hidden goal however. They seek to find the exalted state that exists beyond human, vampires and even revenants. An even scarier thought is that their research has not been fruitless. Zantosa - Once known as the Szantovich, this family once aided its Tzimisce masters by infiltrating courts of nobility. However, they have become indulgent and jaded in modern times. Still quite rich, these revenants tend to be ignored by the Sabbat at large, unless their money or... unique talents are required. True Black Hand Enrathi - Child snatchers and perverts, the Enrathi descend from Italian slave traders and bankers. They serve their inhuman masters by stealing promising children from their previous lives for training by those same masters. In the wake of its destruction, they have become quite distraught and without direction. Marijava - Descended from a leader of a Thuggee sect of assassins and robbers, these revenants serve their masters as spys non par. In addition to this, they are also quite skilled thieves, highly trained assassins and other such roles. They are unswervingly loyal to the sect until its collapse. They soon begin to sell their services to the highest bidder in an attempt to keep their family secure. Rafastio - Rumored to have descended from a sect of blood magi who aided in the Tal'mahe'Ras' formation, these blood mages have always been rather withdrawn. They stick to their own devices unless summoned to aide the sect in some manner pertaining to their skills. With the sects apparent destruction, they have been mostly unfazed, continuing on with their own personal aims and research. Independant D'habi - Once blood servants and priests of the dark and elusive Baali bloodline, the D'habi have suffered greatly since the apparent destruction of their patrons in the Dark Ages. Since then, this Turkish clan of revenants has turned towards more mercenary ends, selling their vast knowledge of the occult to those willing to learn and hiding from those who dont care for their ill-gotten knowledge. Dhampir - While not a strictly revenant family, the Dhampir are almost entirely the same. Born of a thin blood vampire and a mortal, these creatures, often no older than teenagers, are born into a world that scarcely understands them, as they walk a fine line between the worlds of the living and the dead. Many have no idea who or what they even are. See Time of the Thin Blood for more information. Oprichniki - One of the most well kept secrets of the Elder Tzimisce Voivodes, the Oprichniki are servants of the Russian Tzimisce who have long been independant of the rest of their clan. Since the time of Ivan the Terrible, they have served their masters in secret, acting in whatever dark and bloody manner is required of them. However, each of them is haunted by a horrible ghost that torments them. Deceased Revenants Basarab - A family split into two seperate clans, these revenants died out due to civil war. The two families warred at some point, with the Tzimisce siding with one family. The rebel family was wiped out and the others were kept under close watch. Their numbers ravaged they finally were forced to breed with other families to live on and their blood has since died out, being incorporated by others totally. Danislav - Bred from a odd group of Shadow Lord Werewolf Kinfolk that settled in the Tzimisce lands, this line was nearly destroyed after rebelling against their vampire masters. With the patronage of their masters withdrawn and all their ties to the magics that created them cut off, they died a slow death. Some descendants still exist, however their blood has become so diluted they are as normal humans. Khavi - Warrior occultists, these pale skinned and white haired warlocks served an ancient Tzimisce whose name has since been lost. Their masters haven was raided by the Teutonic knights and since none have been heard of. However, it is whispered that neither they nor their dead lord have been destroyed, merely fading from sight to better fight a personal Jyhad. Vlaszy - Warriors non par and kingmakers, these steadfastly loyal revenants captained the hordes of their masters, leading vaste armies of revenants and war ghouls into battle. During the Anarch Revolt however, they were destroyed almost to the final one due to their loyalty to the Eldest. Written off as a necessary casualty, they have since faded from this world. * See bottom of the page for sources for these families. Of course, each is a character by character situation and lists only those that may be of particular interest to them. Talents Grace (Vampire Storytellers Companion, Revised p. 15 - 16) Interrogation (Vampire Storytellers Companion, Revised p. 17) Style (Vampire Storytellers Companion, Revised p. 20) Skills Blood Preperation (Dirty Secrets of the Black Hand, p. 70) Herbalism (Vampire Storytellers Companion, Revised p. 24 Knowledges Enigmas (Vampire Storytellers Companion, Revised p. 29 - 30) Research (Vampire Storytellers Companion, Revised p. 30) Steward (Ghouls: Fatal Addiction p.82) Vampire Lore (Ghouls: Fatal Addiction p. 82) Modified Backgrounds Herd While revenants cannot benefit from drinking blood from humans, they have other reasons for taking this background. Revenants sometimes keep mortals captured so as to feed any guests that should come and visit them. In addition, some of the more useless members of a given family may sometimes be kept around as nothing more than blood dolls in case a guest should come. This background will represent this and is more of a status symbol and a courtesy than serving any actual use. Retainers As revenants do not possess true Vitae in their veins they cannot possess ghouls. However, that does not stop this background from being useful for them at times. When taking it, they may take fellow family members of weaker status and power as extra loyal servants or they may choose something that is appropriate to their family. A short list follows of suggested ideas: Bratovich: Bred dogs or other animals that may be bred for Ghouling Grimaldi: Upper class socialites, Newspaper reporters, and other such people. Obertus: Labratory and Library Assitants although any such would have to be suitably... morally devoid considering some of their experiments. Zantosa: Lovers, a Dominatrix, Drug Dealers.... just about anything that could work with their flaw or personality Status This background doesnt change all too much, although it does take on a different meaning. For revenants it is really only useful among their own family, stating more of a family standing more than a standing with any large organization. Although, it has been noted that in some vampires will tend to seek out those with this standing as they are known to be above their lesser family members. This may, or may not, be a good thing depending on the vampire in question. New Backgrounds Age (Revenant) Revenants have nothing if not time on their hands. And to this end they may take this background to represent their age and increase in their innate powers that come with it. However, this isnt an entirely beneficial background. All revenants have a thin grasp on Humanity as it stands, but as they get older and commit more inhuman deeds, this thin grasp erodes quite rapidly (rapidly is a relative term of course considering their lifespan...) and leaves them as barely human. Storytellers are cautioned to use this background sparingly. At its lowest levels it can put a revenant on equal if not higher standing than most young vampire characters. At its highest levels, it can represent ageless, totally inhuman beasts that could kill most young Cainites (read: most PC's). Any players familiar with the regular Age background, may notice that this version of it has an increased drop in Humanity associated with each dot. This is due to the fact that revenants are not and never will be Human to buffer their desires to commit inhuman deeds, whereas all vampires, no matter how old, have at least a past life as a mortal to give them the insight required to at least attempt to battle their inhuman natures. Dhampir may not take this background. Thin Blooded vampires are too new and most Dhampir are no older than 20 years old. * 100 - 199 years old: +30 freebie points, -2 Humanity, +1 Blood Pool, max discipline rating of 3 ** 200 - 299 years old: +55 freebie points, -3 Humanity, +2 Blood Pool, max discipline rating of 4 *** 300 - 399 years old: +75 freebie points, -4 Humanity, +3 Blood Pool, max discipline rating of 5 **** 400 - 499 years old: +90 freebie points, -5 Humanity, +4 Blood Pool, max discipline rating of 5 ***** 500 - 550 years old: +100 freebie points, -6 Humanity, +5 Blood Pool, max discipline rating of 5 (although 6's are rumored) Benefactor This background represents the character or his immediate families connections with a vampire (or pack of vampires, if you work with the Sabbat) who can aide you should he, not you, deem it required. This background is not the same as the Ally background, which represents someone who exchanges favors with your character. Benefactors tend to be more self serving than an Ally. They will get involved when they feel the situation merits their direct intervention, after all they have no use for someone who needs to be coddled like a child. It is... not advised to say no when your Benefactors ask for return aide and failing them can be catastrophic. Revenants are bred for servitude, and if they cannot fulfill this basic function then that one is a failed servant to be cast aside. * Young vampire ** Respected vampire; Acknowledged Neonate or Priest or a weak Pack *** MIldly Influential; Ancilla or Ductus or a weak Pack with a Young Vampire leader **** Highly Influential; Elder or Templar or a weak Pack with a Respected Vampire leader ***** Powerful vampire; Primogen or Bishop or a weak Pack with a Mildly Influential leader Suggested Merits and Flaws Psychological Recommended: Berserker, Dual Nature, Compulsion, Short Fuse Disallowed: Prey Exclusion Mental Recommended: Lightning Calculator, Eidetic Memory, Weak-Willed Disallowed: Deep Sleeper Aptitudes Recommended: Natural Linguist Disallowed: Eat Food Supernatural Recommended: Medium Disallowed: Inoffensive to Animals, Repulsed by Garlic, Cant Cross Running Water Kindred Ties Recommended: Enemy, Twisted Upbringing Disallowed: All Others Physical Recommended: Double-Jointed, Efficient Digestion, Huge Size, Allergic, Short, Disfigured, Monstrous Disallowed: Selective Digestion, Permanent Wound Ghouls Recommended: Artificially Aged, Vicissitude Modifications (Sabbat revenants or Tzimisce ghouls) Disallowed: Benevolent Domitor (unless a ghoul as well), Kinfolk, True Gypsy New Merits and Flaws Accelerated Aging (3 pt. flaw) Rather than the traditional speed at which all revenants age, you have somehow lost that benefit of your diluted blood. Be it by too much inbreeding, a curse or some other flaw, the end results are the same. You age at the speed at which a mortal does. You are likely considered no better than cannon fodder to your longer lived family members and definitely expendable. Many with this flaw die even before their time as they desperately work to prove themselves in hopes of getting the embrace or at least ghouled. The Inner workings of a Born Servant Revenants possess all of the abilities that ghouls possess with very few differences. Listed below are the key differences between these born servants and the created ones that most other vampires use. Aging While most ghouls require their masters blood to sustain their immortality, revenants have something of a different take on things. Their bodies age at a much slower rate due to the psuedo vitae that maintains them. While not strictly immortal like most normal ghouls, they easily live long enough to attempt to earn the embrace or in the least ghouling. They age normally until they reach somewhere between the ages of 17 to 20. At this point their innate blood kicks in and begins to hamper their aging. Their latent blood kicks in and begins to hamper their aging mechanism. For every ten years that pass after this point, they only age one year. This enables them to survive for centuries without feeling any true ill effects of aging. This is one of the weaknesses of revenants over ghoul servants. Ghouls can be grabbed from off the street, revenants must grow and age till they are useful. Some of the eldest revenants have lived to the ages of 800 to 900 years old. However it is very unlikely that one will make it to this point. Whether they die by failing a vampire, betrayal in their family, diseases (Zantosa are prone to this), or they become embraced, a revenant who makes it to a ripe old age is truly a rarity and traditionally venerated by his family members. Blood Pool Due to their unique heritage, revenants have no need of regular feedings of blood from a Domitor to power their skills. Their bodies produce a weaker, diluted version of the vampire Vitae "naturally." They have a blood pool of 10, which grows one point per every century of life. They can expend one blood per turn to power skills, heal, etc. and it returns at a rate of one point per day. They need not expend blood on awakening as a vampire does, however they cannot ghoul others, create blood bonds or embrace childer (obviously) with their diluted blood. A difference between their blood and a vampires arises even here. A revenants blood pool has absolutely nothing to do with the blood in their bodies. What their pool represents is more a supernatural thing, stating a resource they can draw from and how often they can do it before exhausting their power reserves. A revenant can expend every drop of "blood" in his pool and have nothing to show for it except a slight case of anemia. Breeding While the revenants have some incredible powers, most of this comes from one unique source: inbreeding. While nobody is sure exactly how they gained these powers in the first place, one thing is known for certain... Revenants tend to choose mates from among their own families. This allows them to keep their blood pure and undiluted by the taint of mortal blood. While some might consider this act disgusting and immoral, this is hardly a viewpoint revenants care about as they are scarcely human anyways. However, it has not been unknown for one family to send a member of one family (usually female) to another family, so that they may get a dose of fresh blood in the family tree. Listed below is a chart of chances for breeding that while no means comprehensive should give a fair idea of how breeding works on a rough scale. It lists the chance of the woman giving birth to a revenant. A failure doesnt necesarily mean that no child is born, it can simply mean the child is not born a revenant. Male revenant & Female revenant: 100% Male revenant & Female mortal: 60% Male revenant & Female ghoul: Impossible. Female ghouls cannot reproduce. Male mortal & Female revenant: 50% Male ghoul & Female revenant:80% As a note, revenants are practically unable breed with other supernaturals. With the exceptions of ghouls, thin blood vampires (who are treated as revenants for purposes of this chart) and other revenants, it is impossible for one to have children with most supernaturals (mages, werewolves, changelings, etc.). The half dead cells of the child will cause miscarriages in any but the rarest of cases. They can however occassionaly breed with those who are not true supernaturals (kinfolk, kinain, gypsies, Sorcerors, etc.). These children are almost always normal mortals but some exceptions have been heard of, however. The ST can impose whatever horrible side effects of deformities they choose on the children of either of these unions. Disciplines All revenants have family disciplines that they may learn with ease (the exception being Dhampir). These disciplines have been honed and hammered out with time and they come naturally to these creatures. However, some disciplines are not totally out of their reach as far as learning. While they can learn any vampiric discipline, they traditionally find it hard to earn enough favors to get a teacher and its unlikely they can find a vampire whose kind enough to just teach them (ghouling is a whole different story). However, no matter the training a Revenant recieves he cannot attain any mastery over disciplines past 2 without much time and training on his part. All training times for Revenants are doubled and even then they must be of sufficient age to use the powers. Ghouling Most revenants will never taste a drop of true vampire blood. They serve their masters with unswerving loyalty as their very lives already depend on their service. The only clan that reliably takes revenants as ghouls are the Tzimisce. They use them as guardians, experiments and for the rare few, companionship. A revenant who is ghouled stands to gain a few things however, acquiring one dot of potence and able to replenish their blood pool more rapidly if their domitor is willing to feed them. However in exchange for this, they become blood bound to a vampire and must bend to his every whim and desire.
