Aromatherapy is a science of
using oils, named essential oils, extracted from aromatic plants.
Essential oil is a precious substance - for example in some cases more
than an ounce of the plant would not be enough for producing a single
drop of essential oil. Pure essential oils can be extracted from
different parts of the plant - flower, seed, leaf, bark, twig,
root, etc. Each essential oil is made up of many different chemical
components performing key roles in living plants. Essential oils can
contain hundreds of organic constituents, including vitamins,
hormones, and other elements. Essence molecules in the plant are
approximately 100 times more concentrated as an essential oil than in
the dried plant (herb).
Obtaining an essential oil
from the plant can be done by distillation or
extraction method.
A common method in aromatherapy plant distillation is producing
essential oil by
direct steam distillation. Citrus
essential
oils are extracted by
method named Cold Expression which is based on mechanical pressure.
Some plants are very delicate and their essential oils can be
extracted only by Solvent extraction.
Because the essential
oils are too potent to by applied directly to the skin, in
Aromatherapy skin care products they are
diluted
in vegetable oils (sesame oil, etc.) named
carrier oils. Both carrier and essential oils are easily absorbed by
the skin, feeding it up as well.
