"You cannot afford to be indifferent these days. It's either you're 'black' and staunchly against something, or 'white' and for an issue through and through." I've heard this said many times before. A little too often, I should say, because it has started to sink in me; not in the sense that it has convinced me to see things only in two views, but in that it has made me feel lost. I have been criticized for "playing safe," for wallowing in the "gray" area...as if being where I am now makes me less of a person than those who claim to be 'aware' and 'in touch' with the real world. Call me eclectic; I am not someone who can solidly say I am in favor of or against something. I refuse to be the presence or absence color. It's either too light or dark; either way, I don't really get to see the picture as it really is. I'd rather be that shade in between; while it may not be perfect and absolute, it is how I, as a rational being, see what is before me. I take a dab of white and a little bit more of black, if the case may be, to get just the right shade. This website is an attempt to reconcile all these "shades of gray" in me into one monochromatic scale. | |
