| The Buddhist Temple Murder Case The links below lead to a 3 part series published in Phoenix Magazine on the 1991 Buddhist Temple murder case in Arizona. On a hot August day, nine people were murdered at a Buddhist Temple near Phoenix, Arizona, apparently by two high school ROTC students (I use the word "apparently" because their own murder convictions - one in a death penalty trial! - were also based on questionable confessions). Detectives investigating the case originally extracted false confessions from four "suspects" - confessions including numerous "facts that only the killer would know." After the detectives finally linked the killings to the two high school students, they discovered that one of the students was also responsible for another murder for which yet another defendant who had "confessed" was awaiting trial. All of these false confessions would have led to death penalty cases, all would have almost inevitably resulted in convictions and death sentences and possibly wrongful executions. This set of articles will take you inside the investigation, and illustrate why there are so many "mistakes" in criminal (including DP) cases.
