TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR PET A HOME
Sometimes giving up a pet is unavoidable - your job moves you, your pet doesn't get along at all with your small children, allergies, etc. Before you rush off to leave him/her at a shelter, please consider doing the following to give your pet the best chance of living a full, happy life with a loving owner who may be much more compatible with your pet:
1. Check with local pet shops and see if they'll allow you to post a "Home Needed" ad on a bulletin board there. Make sure you specify that veterinarian references are REQUIRED.
2. Hang an ad on your vet's bulletin board. Almost all vets have them and chances are someone may have just lost their pet to old age and would love to give another one a home.
3. Check with friends, relatives and co-workers to see if they know anyone who could take your pet.
4. Place an ad in your local newspaper. WARNING: ALWAYS check veterinarian references and at least ride by the caller's home and see what kind of home you'd be sending your pet to. This will help cut the chances that your pet is being taken only to be sold to a laboratory! This is a serious problem and you should do everything possible to avoid this happening to your pet .
5. If all else fails, PLEASE take your pet to a shelter. DO NOT leave him behind outside to fend for himself. He will be much better off in a shelter than he will be starving to death, hit by a vehicle, or abused by strangers who find him a nuisance.
6. Also, do not lie to a potential owner about any behavior problems your pet may have. This will only result in a tragedy when the new owner finds out. Let the potential owner know that your pet is not good with children, chews, etc. You want to make sure that the new owner is willing and capable to deal with any problems.
Lastly, if you're thinking of getting a pet, please consider adopting a loving animal who is waiting in a shelter for a home where he/she can give all the love he/she has, usually out of gratitude. Yes, adopted pets quite often seem to "show gratitude" for being saved. What could make you feel better than "saving a life?" What better reward can you receive than unconditional life-long love?
