Can you dream language? The first few weeks I was in America I dreamt in Dutch, while everything else I did was in English. After these couple of weeks I started dreaming in English. I was totally used to the language and that started to show in my dreams. I still dreamt in Dutch sometimes though; for example when I dreamt about Dutch people. Nowadays, back in Holland, I dream in both languages. Once I dreamt about an American speaking Dutch; that was just normal. Its a little of both now; sometimes I dream in Dutch, sometimes I dream in English. We dream about things that are part of our lives; friends, family, problems, things we want, etc; language is a part of our life also. Without language, communication would not go as smoothly as it does right now. In your dreams people talk or think too. Its just like watching a movie. Everybody moves, acts and talks, only now your mind and the things that bother you unconsciously, are the director. To answer the question: yes I believe that people can dream in languages. I believe this because of my own experiences previously described. Esther: Can you learn two different languages? When you go to school, you have already learned a language. Your parents taught you a language. Usually, when you get a bit older, you get in touch with different sortes of languages. When you go to a secundairy school, they even teach you all kinds of different languages. French, German, Spanish.. There are some langauges that are easier to learn, because the grammatical structure is more like your own language. French people learn Italian easier than English. English is a language people tend to learn easy as well, because you hear it so much on the television and on the radio. It is a worldlanguage, so therefore it is important to learn it. When you have a language that you don't hear often, it is more difficult to learn. For example, Chinese is very difficult for English people to learn. Some children are brought up with two different languages. When you have parents who both speak a different kind of language, you are usually brought up with those two languages. They can even speak English together, while the mother for example speaks French and the father for example German. Then the child will be brought up in three different languages. When you are brought up with different langauges, you have to keep it up. I have heard a story of a man who was brought up with two different langauges. After a while, he didn' speak one of the two languages anymore. When he was a grown man, he couldn' t speak that language anumore. He didn' keep it up, so he couldn' t speak it anymore. I learned from a teacher when I was still at my secundairy school, that you have to keep up the language, otherwise it will go away and you won' t be able to speak it as good as you do when you have learned it. To answer my question 'Can you learn two different languages?' my answer would be yes. Ofcourse, people learn in different ways and one can learn a language easier than the other. One thing I have learned is that you have to keep up the language, otherwise it will slip away. |
