Big game hunter
s
Three shows come to Sacramento in their search for contestant
s
By Alison Roberts -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Tuesday, October 14, 2003

Here's a riddle for you: What has 7,000 legs, invades a shopping center on a beautiful fall afternoon and makes more noise than a roomful of lottery winners?
Answer: A crowd of would-be "Wheel of Fortune" contestants who turned out for game-show auditions at Sunrise Mall.

The proof was there Saturday, just before the official starting time of 2 p.m., when a thick line of wannabe Wheelers filled the mall from the central atrium and snaked along a sidewalk outside.

Missed it? Don't worry. The 32-foot-long, bright-yellow "Wheel of Fortune" Wheelmobile may have pulled out of the parking lot, but the fun and games aren't over.

Saturday was just the first of three weekends of auditions, open to those 18 and over. This Saturday, "Pyramid" comes to the mall (complete with an appearance by host Donny Osmond); and on Oct. 25, "Jeopardy!" will be asking for questions (and will include an appearance by host Alex Trebek).
Certainly, the opening game day was a winner on any decibel meter. It was a nonstop squeal of fortune, thanks to a boisterous audition crowd of about 3,500 throughout the afternoon.

Of those, about 130 people whose names were drawn after a spin in a raffle drum got onto the stage in groups of five to play a live version of the popular TV game show (which airs in Sacramento at 7:30 p.m. weekdays on Channel 10). They laughed and screamed, jumped up and down, ran in place, pumped the air with their fists and somehow still managed to compete.

Shana McCarl, who is...called on stage, is a winner -- with a twist -- in the fan game. The 19-year-old woke up before it was fully light and drove down from her home in Cool, arriving at 7:40 a.m. She was drawn not by the chance to pick out letters but by the chance to meet David Sidoni, an actor working as the live event's Pat Sajak.

"He was in my favorite movie, 'Newsies,' " she says of Sidoni.

For his part, Sidoni, catching his breath during a break in the game, says he loves such encounters and the other unscripted surprises in the day's interactions.

"When you're doing TV, you're usually playing to a camera; here, I've got a thousand people screaming at me," says the actor, who is 33 and lives in Orange County. "It's the best job in the world." Sidoni has done the Sajak routine on close to 50 outings of the Wheelmobile's road trip.

The day's Vanna -- who shares the stage with a life-size cardboard cutout of the real Ms. White -- is Holly Brooks, who is 24, lives in Hollywood and walks in stiletto high heels like a pro.

"It's a lot harder than it looks, and I do have to spell," she says of her job, even though she doesn't have to speak. Unlike her TV counterpart, she has to actually write the letters down on the game board.

Sacramento itself is a winner of sorts in landing this series of auditions, billed as a "Contestant Fest" and hosted by Sony Pictures Television and News10 (KXTV). The local ABC affiliate broadcasts all three of the Sony game shows.

Sacramento is a strong market for the three programs, making it a natural audition spot, says Harry Friedman, executive producer for "Wheel" and "Jeopardy!" as well as a consultant to "Pyramid."

"There's a tremendous loyalty among our fans," Friedman says by phone from his office in the Los Angeles area. "Our hosts have been coming into Americans' homes for a lot of years.

Bale-ing i
n

By BUGS ONLINE

THERES something about Christian Bales teeth that bothers us so they are just too straight and have a werewolf quality and distracts us from whatever hes saying. When we learned that hes going to play millionaire Bruce Wayne, who sometimes wears a bat mask and goes out in the night under the name Batman, we rejoiced ... but we have reservations nonetheless.

Let us explain the Dark Knight has been played by many others on the big screen in the past ranging from the best (Michael Keaton) to the worst (George Clooney) all who seem to have been cast because of a cleft on their chin. But this is the first time that the role of the caped crusader has been given to a British actor. One who in previous roles (American Psycho and Equilibrium) has shown he can portray the inner struggle competently.

Plus his chin looks just fine, as does his physique (think of that scene when he took off his shirt in Reign of Fire hot!). However, there is that problem with those teeth Waynes alter ego would surely be found out in a matter of seconds! Hmmm ... then again, the logic of that happening is as ridiculous as trying to make sense of why a smart woman like Lois Lane never figured out Clark Kent was Superman.

Expectations are running high for the new Batman movie not only due to the casting of Bale but also because the director is none other than Christopher Nolan (Memento and Insomnia).

At The Bale Collection (mem bers.fortunecity.com/christian bale/home.html) this quote from Nolan is posted: What I see in Christian is the ultimate embodiment of Bruce Wayne. He has exactly the (right) balance of darkness and light that we were looking for.

Good to know that his chin was not the only thing that got him the role.

Bales facts of life can be found at The Bale Collection like hes 188cm tall and made his film debut as a young schoolboy who is sent to a concentration camp in Steven Spielbergs Empire of the Sun in 1987. The movie received Oscar nominations and Bale won the National Board of Reviews for Outstanding Juvenile Performance.

His full name is Christian Morgan Bale and he was born on Jan 30, 1974 in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. His family moved to England soon after he was born. Bale has lived in Portugal and the United States.

Thanks to his fathers passion for animal rights and the environment, Bale is also very concerned about animal and human rights. Although not a vegetarian he eats fish and chicken his rationale is that one should eat animals that one feels comfortable killing oneself. It is not surprising to read that he and his wife (Sandra Balsic, an independent film producer and former model) share their house with rescued animals.

In 1992 he said: I love making movies but I also like my privacy. If it all ended tomorrow, Id just live by the sea and be perfectly happy.

Thankfully the 29-year-old actor is still in demand, and more so in recent years.

This site also offers a large collection of photos from magazines and movie images.

As it turns out, this site happens to have one of the nicest layouts. Other sites are not as good but do check out Christian Bale Movie Bloopers (www.geoci ties. com/Hollywood/Theater/ 5070). Like the title suggests it lists out all the bloopers that can be found in Bales movies.

From this site we found out that there is a Christian Bale official site (www.christianbale.org) but it is still under construction.

Another fansite asks: Baleheads who we are. Are you one?

That site (www.geocities. com/hollywood/boulevard/1412/) goes on to explain what a Balehead is A Balehead is the name for a fan of Christian Bales. No one really knows where the name came but we all seem to accept it and use it to identify ourselves. So, ask yourself, are you a Balehead?

There are many sites on Bale too many to mention but if youre interested go back to The Bale Collection and click on the link button for the full list. Then just enjoy.

More *NSYNC delay news

MTV.com

'NSYNC fans who have been waiting for the band to regroup shouldn't hold their breath though the boy band had previously talked about starting to work together this January, those plans are now on hold.

"It could be spring or summer. We never really set a date in stone," Justin Timberlake said. "We just said, 'Let's just start getting all of us in place so we can start making a record again' (see "New 'NSYNC In 2004, But First A Joey Fatone Comedy LP"). That's the way a record should be made. It's more fun that way. You just have to follow the inspiration where it goes."

Why the delay? The band wants to make sure that JC Chasez gets as much time as Timberlake did to explore a solo career. While a date for 'NSYNC to resume working together wasn't officially pushed back, JC's debut album Schizophrenic has been, repeatedly (see "JC Chasez 'Really, Really Happy' With Album, But Pushes Back Release Date"), from August 26 to October 21 to most recently, January 27. Not that the delays should affect the next 'NSYNC record indefinitely.

"We're not really going to postpone it too much," Chasez said. "My record's done, so I can go to work any time. As far as me being out there, I'm going to take my chances with mine, that's just the way it is. But we're going to be friends forever, so the record will get done no matter what. It's just a matter of timing."

However long it takes, though, his bandmates are willing to wait. For his part, Timberlake is considering whether his solo stretch has run its natural course, or if it's time to start thinking about a next single or even the next record.

"Everything is peaceful and easy right now," Timberlake said. "Obviously, all the jitters will come back when it's time to do the second album. But I hadn't really listened to my record in a while, and the other week, I listened to it and I really enjoyed it. I don't know if that's cocky or pretentious or whatever, but I mean that in the most humble of ways. What I realized is that I feel like I'm over the hump."

"The first four or five months [after Justified's release], it was me out there trying to prove to everybody that I could do this on my own, because there was so much skepticism," he continued. "And I feel like I stepped up to the plate, so that the second half of this year has just been about enjoying the ride, and feeling like there was no pressure anymore."

Because of that experience, Timberlake said that he wants Chasez to have the same chance to prove himself, on his own terms, away from the band.

"I want to sit back and support his record," Timberlake said. "Just as his friend, I want him to have every opportunity I had.
"

Three Reasons for "Some Girls"

MTV.Co
m

JC Chasez has constructed an interesting theory pertaining to the opposite sex.

"There's three reasons why a girl would dance on another girl," he offered, explaining the basis for "Some Girls (Dance with Women)," the steamy first single from his upcoming solo album. "One, she's attracted to a guy, so she decides to tease him a little bit. Two, she's avoiding a guy. And three, she's a lesbian. I decided to take an optimistic approach. She's doing it for me."

So that explains Madonna's onstage fling with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards.

"Everybody knows they're not lesbians; they're teasing the world," Chasez said, calling Wednesday while vacationing in Florida. "Girls are willing to do strange things to get our attention."

With "Some Girls (Dance With Women)," Chasez will likely be getting some attention of his own. The song, due at radio and video outlets at the end of November, features a provocative accompanying video and a remix with a guest appearance from Dirt McGirt, the rapper formerly known as Ol' Dirty Bastard.

"The record company said this is an event, you have to do something," Chasez explained. "I was like, 'I don't know, I kind of like it the way it is.' They were like, 'Just name somebody you think would rip this.' I tried to think of someone unique. Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott are amazing rappers, but they've done a million collaborations. So in my mind, Dirty is fresh. Fresh out of jail, yes. Nevertheless, no one's heard from him in a while and he's due to make some noise. And the verse he did is really cool."

For the video, Chasez worked with director Martin Weisz, best known for Korn's "Make Me Bad."

"Everything was done in good taste," Chasez said. "A lot of cats were worried it would be really strong, but it's just enough to put a smile on your face. I shot it with a very European feel. I didn't want it to be overly flashy and look like every video."

The video is set in the streets of Prague, although it was actually filmed mostly in Los Angeles, with Dirt's cameo shot a few days ago in New York.

"It's a narrative in that I'm the voyeur, watching the action," Chasez added with a laugh. "It moves [from the street] into a ballroom, but it's not a club scene. It's like a costume party, a Baroque period kind of feel, with white wigs and white makeup."

Chasez co-produced "Some Girls (Dance with Women)" with his friends Riprock 'n' Alex G, who worked on 'NSYNC's No Strings Attached.

"It starts off really bouncy, light, almost calypso feeling," JC said. "And then I added these little flute lines in the B verse that kind of made it really smooth and sexy."

The song is among the wide variety of party anthems on Chasez's Schizophrenic, due January 27 (see "JC Chasez Preview
s Schizophrenic Solo Debut").

Last week, JC premiered a different song on "The Wade Robson Project," the even steamier "A.D.I.D.A.S.," an acronym for All Day I Dream About Sex (similar to Korn and Killer Mike's songs of the same name), which is being considered for the second single.

"I kind of wanted 'Some Girls' as the first single because even though the title's kind of obvious, it's a very thoughtful track," Chasez said. "It's something we all talk about. It's like nobody ever really isolated it and pointed the finger at it. 'A.D.I.D.A.S.' is surprising a lot of people. It's just right in your face, which will be fun, but I want people to know I did spend time thinking about some of these songs."

Chasez is finished with Schizophrenic and will concentrate on promoting the album until the middle of next year, when 'NSYNC are expected to reunite

Bass Encourages Students in Math, Scienc

Associated Pres

HOUSTON - After a highly publicized failed attempt last year, 'N Sync singer Lance Bass still hopes to go into space one day.

And if a group of Houston middle school students has any say, Bass will do it in "Lance's Lab" while eating chicken strips with salsa, wearing stylish pants and T-shirts and listening to and recording music to fight motion sickness.

On Wednesday, Bass visited Ortiz Middle School as part of World Space Week, which commemorates the Oct. 4, 1957, launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite, and the Oct. 10, 1967, signing of a treaty that governs exploration and peaceful uses of space.

"Just stick with math and science and dream big," Bass told nearly 40 students after hearing their proposal for "Lance's Lab," part of a national competition in conjunction with World Space Week, which takes place annually from Oct. 4-10. Bass was recruited to promote the importance of academics in preparation for space travel.

The 24-year-old also discussed the training he underwent while trying to secure a ride on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the international space station.

He would have been the youngest person ever in space, but had to cancel his plans to fly last October after failing to raise the estimated $20 million fare. A year ago, he trained at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

"The training is very difficult, very physical," Bass said. "There is also a lot of psychological training."

One student asked whether Bass feared being abducted by aliens if he went to space.

"I'm not scared of any aliens," he responded as students burst into laughter. "If there are aliens, I think they'll be friendly."
