| OVERVIEW OF THE CURRICULUM OF THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM (IBPYP) THE PYP AIMS TO SYNTHESIZE THE BEST RESEARCH AND PRACTICE FROM A RANGE OF NATIONAL SYSTEMS WITH THE WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS TO CREATE A TRANSCISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM WHICH IS RELEVANT, CHALLENGING AND ENGAGING FOR LEARNERS IN THE 3-12 AGE RANGE. THE CORE CURRICULUM IS BASED ON NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SOURCES. IT PRESENTS AN ANALYSIS IN TERMS OF 5 ELEMENTS: CONCEPTS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ATTITUDES AND ACTION. THESE ARE BROUGHT TOGETHER INTO A MEANINGFUL SYNTHESIS THROUGH PLANNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT. AT THE HEART OF THE CURRICULUM IS A SET OF POWERFUL IDEAS OR CONCEPTS WHICH HAVE GREAT SIGNIFICANCE WITHIN EACH DISCIPLINE, AND WHICH TRANSCEND DISCIPLINARY BARRIERS. THESE CONCEPTS PROVIDE A WAY INTO A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE THROUGH STRUCTURED INQUIRY AND SEEK ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING: CAUSATION � WHY IS IT LIKE IT IS? CHANGE � HOW IS IT CHANGING? CONNECTION � HOW IS IT CONNECTED TO OTHER THINGS? FUNCTION�HOW DOES IT WORK? FORM � WHAT IS IT LIKE? PERSPECTIVE�WHAT ARE THE POINTS OF VIEW? REFLECTION � HOW DO WE KNOW? RESPONSIBILITY � WHAT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY? THE CONCEPTS FURNISH A FORMAT FOR THE EXPLORATION OF SIGNIFICANT CONTENT. TRANSDISCIPLINARY UNITS STRUCTURED AROUND CONCEPTS PROVIDE A CONTEXT IN WHICH STUDENTS CAN ACQUIRE AND UNDERSTAND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ATTITUDES. THE AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE ARE ORGANIZED INTO SIX (6) THEMES THAT PROVIDE THE STRUCTURE FOR THE SCHOOL�S FRAMEWORK OF CONTENT OR PROGRAM OF INQUIRY (POI). THESE THEMES ARE AN INQUIRY INTO: WHO WE ARE WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES HOW THE WORLD WORKS HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES SHARING THE PLANET THE �PROGRAM OF INQUIRY� (POI) EXTENDS INTO THE AREAS OF LANGUAGE ARTS, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, SOCIAL STUDIES, THE ARTS, AND PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION. THE SEARCH FOR UNDERSTANDING IS CENTRAL TO THE CURRICULUM. THE UNDERSTANDING OF MEANING IS COUPLED WITH THE STUDENT�S ACQUISITION AND APPLICATION OF A RANGE OF SKILLS. THESE SKILLS ARE STRUCTURED TO PREPARE THE STUDENT FOR FURTHER EDUCATION AND FOR LIFE BEYOND SCHOOL.
