Lord of the Rings Facts
The facts below are written with the purpose of educating those who enjoyed watching the New Line Cinema movies but have never read the books, about the differences between the two mediums. Other facts are thrown in for fun.
Differences Between the Books and Movies
*Tom Bombadil was a character in The Felloship of the Ring that did not appear in the movie. He lived in the Old Forest, next to Buckland and rescued the hobbits from the Barrowdowns.
*In the movie, Arwen gives her necklace to Aragorn. In Tolkien's book, Arwen gives her necklace to Frodo, which allows him to pass to the Grey Havens with Elrond and Galadriel where he was completely healed of the wound given to him by the Ringwraith blade.
*In the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, it was Glorfindel, a mighty Elven lord of the Eldar who helped Frodo cross the Ford into Rivendell, not Arwen.
*Frodo was in possession of the ring for about 30 years before he set out on the quest to destroy the ring. He was 50ish when the fellowship was formed.
The Movies
*While filming The Lord of the Rings, Sean Astin and Domininc Monaghan both had foot injuries. Dom got a sliver stuck in his foot when fliming the Buckleberry Ferry scene and Sean got a large piece of glass in his foot when he was filming the scene where he tries to follow Frodo to Mordor and runs into the river after him. There were other
injuries as well. Viggo Mortesen, who plays Aragron, had one of his teeth knocked out and asked if they could glue it back in so he could finish shooting a fighting scene. Orlando Bloom broke a rib when he fell off his horse. Ouch!
The Books
*Gollum was a hobbit whose life was increased by 500 years though his possession of the ring of power.
*Aragorn lived to be 210 years old.
*Celebrain is the name of the wife of Elrond. She was captured by orcs when travelling over the Misty Mountains in the Redhorn Pass. The elven lady was tortured and recieved a poisonous wound. Elladan and Elrohir, Elrond and her's twin sons, rescued Celebrian and brought her to Elrond, who restored her to health. However, she lost all joy in Middle-earth and travelled to the Grey Havens.
*Elves sleep with their eyes open and can rest while traveling. They are immortal and the highest beings of Middle-earth but can be killed in battle. They also experience the deepest joy and sorrow of all beings in Middel-earth.
*The elven bow given to Legolas in Lothlorien was strung with Elven hair.
