The Oaks Stakes RESULTS Welcome to the Oaks Stakes, where the contenders for the final race in the ES Triple Crown will be decided. Post Positions: 1. Perfect Unage 2. CJS Purple Heaven 3. Icharus An unusual field, though small, including this year’s Derby winner, Perfect Unage! Also in is CJS Purple Heaven, who has done well in a few prep races. The long shot, Icharus, is going to have his work cut out for him! And into the starting gate, Perfect Unage goes in smooth, CJS Purple Heaven no trouble, and Icharus needs the slightest bit of coaxing before going in. And they’re off! It’s Icharus off to an early start, fairly jumping out of the gate! Perfect Unage out behind him, running calmly, with CJS Purple Heaven settling comfortably in third, her favorite running position. And as they enter the first turn, Perfect Unage is let out a bit to take the lead, CJS Purple Heaven gaining a bit, with Icharus under a tight hold to reserve him. Icharus isn’t liking it, he’s fighting his jockey, throwing up his head and arching his neck under the pressure! The horses remain cemented in position around the beckstretch, with Perfect Unage and CJS Purple Heaven moving with no real hurry, but Icharus is constantly trying to get the bit in his teeth! His strides are becoming uneven, as he concentrates more on getting his own way! He’s right on CJS Purple Heaven’s flank now, and begins to try to get through the tiny gap on the filly’s inside! Now, they’re entering to final stretch, and CJS Purple Hevaen has been released, flying up on the outside of Perfect Unage, who is caught off guard! The filly flies past the colt, to take a two length lead, but Icharus has not been left behind, his jockey has finally released his hold, and is taking huge strides to catch up with the filly! Perfect Unage is unprepared, and begins to dig in, hoping to catch the other two before the wire! He inches up behind Icharus, who has caught up with CJS Purple Heaven, the three are neck and neck, it’s a race to the finish as all strain to put they’re noses in front! At the moment, its Perfect Unage in the lead by a hair on his nose, Icharus, then a CJS Purple Heaven with her ears flat back at the interference! They’re approaching the wire… And it’s a photo finish! The Judges decision: Perfect Unage wins! By the barest nose, Icharus in second, with CJS Purple Heaven a hair behind, though her hooves in front of the colts’. Results: WIN: Perfect Unage Place: Icharus Show: CJS Purple Heaven Prize Money ($3000 split in the manner 50-30-20) Perfect Unage: $1500 Icharus: $900 CJS Purple Heaven: $600 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Lady Liberty Stakes RESULTS As you may have guessed, the Lady Liberty Stakes is run on the home grounds of the Belmond, New York City! The Post Positions: 1. Golden’s Local Star 2. Moon Dance Eclips 3. Madame Toubinski A field of fillies! Certainly keeping in tune with the “Lady” theme! All three of today’s girls are proven stakes runners, and all have made bids in the ES Triple Crown, especially Madame Toubinski, who is the winner of the Preakness! Will today be a repeat performance? As they line up for the starting gate, its Golden’s Local Star giving some trouble! She goes in after some coaxing and pushing, Moon Dance Eclips and Madame Toubinski going in like ladies. And the starting bells rings, the fillies jump from the gate! It’s Golden’s Local Star off the quickest, Moon Dance Eclips settling in second, but Madame Toubinski off a beat slow! She’s being left behind… Uh oh, what’s this? Golden’s Local Star is being checked! Is this a try to reserve her energy, or is she lame! Apparently not! She’s running strong in third, just behind a Madame Toubinski who has made up good ground, and is now catching up the Moon Dance Eclips! All in all, the pace remains slow without a real speed horse in today’s race, and the fillies round the first turn… And they’ve been shuffled again, this time with Moon Dance Eclips dropping back to reserve pace, and Madame Toubinski left in the lead! And she makes good use of it, charging straight off at full tilt, obviously hoping to catch the other two off guard and gain a lot of ground! But will it tire her out too much? But Moon Dance Eclips isn’t falling for it! She immediately picks up the pace again, to chase Madame Toubinski around the far stretch! Golden’s Local Star also has come back strong, and is half a length back of the two blacks, waiting for the final turn! And there it is! Golden’s Local Star now off like a rocket, to take second place in front of Moon Dance Eclips! Madame Toubinski running without any trouble, and now it’s Moon Dance Eclips’ turn! She bounds ahead to run neck and neck for second with the chestnut filly, both of them slowly cutting down Madame Toubinski’s lead! And as they approach the finish line, Madame Toubinski still going strong! Golden’s Local Star not giving up, same with Moon Dance Eclips! And now they’re under the wire, and its Madame Toubinski the winner! An absolutely fabulous performance by Madame Toubinski, off a beat late, making up great ground, then keeping a lead under such high speeds!
