SPECIAL STAGES Basic Knowledge Main objective :The main objective of these special stages is to collect all the blue spheres. Secondary objective: The secondary objective of these special stages is to collect all available rings. Different sphere types:
Basic navigation: Basic method: If you collect the blue spheres around the outside edges of groups of spheres in a square shape, then they will turn red behind you. But once you complete collecting them round the edge, they will all turn into rings (including the ones in the centre of the formation). This is what you want to happen, and is the easiest way of collecting all the spheres. This goes for any group in a square shape that has other blue spheres inside it. The blue spheres in a group of 4 or in a line will NOT turn into rings no matter how you collect them. Once all the blue spheres have been collected, you will get the Chaos Emerald. Getting a ‘Perfect’: A ‘Perfect’ means that you have collected all possible rings on that special stage, and will earn you 50,000 points (enough for an extra life)! Special Stage 1: The Green Emerald Difficulty: Very easy Method: There are three types of blue sphere formation in this level; groups of 16 in the shape of a square, groups of 4 in the shape of a square, and lines. To complete this stage, go round the edges of the groups of 16 spheres, follow the lines of blue spheres between the star posts, and collect the groups of 4 spheres any way you like (as long as you make sure you don’t touch them once they’ve turned red!). To get a ‘Perfect’: Save one of the lines of spheres or a group of 4 till last – i.e. a group that won’t turn into rings. Special Stage 2: The Orange Emerald Difficulty: Fairly easy Method: Follow the obvious path that has been laid out for you, and all should be well. To get a ‘Perfect’: There is a group of 16 spheres in a long line around a group of star posts. These are the only spheres in the whole level that won’t turn into rings, so get them last. Special Stage 3: The Purple Emerald Difficulty: Fairly easy Method: Follow the obvious path that has been laid out for you, and all should be well. To get a ‘Perfect’: Keep an eye on your sphere gauge at the top of the screen. Once it shows you only have 18 spheres left, you will see in front of you a line of 2 spheres that won’t turn into rings, and beyond that, a square of 16 spheres that obviously will turn into rings. Jump over one or both of the line of 2 blue spheres, then collect the group of 16. Once you have collected the 16 plus the rings, go back on yourself to collect the 1 or 2 spheres that you deliberately missed out. Special Stage 4: The Blue Emerald Difficulty: Fairly hard Method: The path here is less obvious. My best advice here is to make a bee-line for the huge ‘cross’ shape of blue spheres. It is located to your left just after you collect the first group of blue spheres. Go right round the outside of this shape, then collect all the rings. Also, don’t be confused by the squares of blue spheres inside the star posts – enter via two blue spheres, then collect the square inside the star posts in the usual method. Leave via the two remaining blue spheres. The rest should be reasonably obvious. To get a ‘Perfect’: As long as you don’t leave the big ‘cross’ shape until last, you can’t fail to get a perfect. Special Stage 5: The Grey Emerald Difficulty: Fairly hard Method: When you start this special stage, you are in a sort of ‘corridor’. Do NOT carry straight on to the end of this corridor. Instead, look for the two groups of three star posts in a line, one to the left of you, and one to the right. Jump over these in turn to get to two new corridors, each with a group of spheres in. Once you’ve got the spheres in the second corridor, carry on down to the far end of it and jump over the three red spheres in a line to get you to a fourth corridor (parallel to the one you started in). Head down to the far end of this to get four groups of nine spheres. Then head back to where you started and continue to the end of that corridor (i.e. what I originally said what not to do), and you will find the final four lone spheres. To get a ‘Perfect’: Just make sure you leave the four lone spheres until last. Special Stage 6: The Red Emerald Difficulty: Fairly hard Method: Get the first four spheres (the two nearest you first, then the two furthest away). This should lead you a place where there is a group of 16 in a square in the middle, and three groups of four round the edges. Get the 16 first, then get the group of 4 that were to the right of you when you first came in. But make sure you get them in a way that allows you to come back into where the 16 spheres were (I usually collect the left side, then turn and collect the right side). Then get the group of 4 that were directly in front of you when you first came in. Again, get them in a way that will allow you to come back to the same area. Then get the group of 4 that were to the left of you when you first came in, but get the two nearest you first, then the two behind. This will lead you into an area that looks exactly like when you first came in. In fact it is exactly the same sequence of movements that now doesn’t change until the end of the stage – keep repeating and you will eventually get there. To get a ‘Perfect’: Follow the above exactly. Special Stage 7: The Sky Blue Emerald Difficulty: Very hard Method: There is no exact method or obvious path for this special stage. It is also confusing because there appear to be no ‘squares’ of blue spheres. However, if you look closely you will see that there are squares, but they’ve already been semi-completed for you. So simply get the three spheres on the outside edge to complete the square and get the rings. At some point in the special stage it may well become necessary to jump over two hazardous spheres in a row. Should you need to do this, time your jump so that you jump right before you hit the first hazardous sphere, and you should just miss the second one when you land. To get a ‘Perfect’: Leave one of the long lines of spheres (or just the one on the end) or a group of four spheres until last. USEFUL CHEATS Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, Super Tails: SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 3 In order to get Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails, get all the Chaos Emeralds throughout the Sonic 3 game. Once at Mushroom Hill, jump into the flashing ring that Knuckles closes. Then, get all the Super Emeralds. Get fifty rings and double jump. Sonic will turn into Hyper Sonic, will flash colours, and have stars flashing around him. Knuckles will turn into Hyper Knuckles and blink grey and red. Tails will turn Super, but flashes yellow. His bird friends will also help him; even though the birds might get left behind, Tails is invincible.Secret bonus: SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 2 When playing as Knuckles at the second zone, climb up every wall until reaching the top. If you see an extra life there, glide left to find a secret.Secret stages: SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 3 Play "1F" at the sound test screen, then highlight Special Stage one or two and press Start.Easy Chaos / Super Emeralds: SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 3Step 1: Enable the "Level Select" and "Debug mode" codes. Select your chosen character on the level select screen and start the game on Angel Island act 1 by pressing ‘A’ and ‘Start’. Run to the right of the screen and keep going as low as you can (no bouncing onto higher platforms) for a short distance. You will come to a large drop with some swinging vines (probably the same ones you used to do the "level select" cheat). Don’t jump on the vine. Instead, drop straight down and turn to the left of the screen. There you will find a secret passage (you will have to bash through some rocks to get there) with a special stage ring at the end of it. Jump inside and complete the special stage. Once you have finished, and have come back into Angel Island zone, pause the game and press ‘A’ to reset the console. Repeat the process as many times as you need to in order to get all the Chaos Emeralds.Step 2: When you have got all the Chaos Emeralds, reset the console by pausing the game and pressing ‘A’. Get to the level select screen in the usual manner, and select Mushroom Hill act 1. Run to the right of the screen and keep going until you see the big special stage ring (you can’t really miss it), and enter it. The principle is the same as above – if you keep collecting an emerald and then resetting the console by pausing and pressing ‘A’, you can collect all the Super Emeralds. This is far quicker than trying to search all the zones for special stage rings because you can ‘re-use’ the same one over and over again, and is very useful when the battery inside the Sonic 3 game runs out and loses all your saved games. FUN CHEATS Mental Sonic: SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 3 Enable the "Debug Mode" code. Press B + C during game play. Sonic will go mental, and dash about on the spot, turn upside down, and do other stunts. This can also be done with Tails and Knuckles.Play Death Egg Zones 1 and 2 with Knuckles: SONIC & KNUCKLES ALONE / SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 3 Enable the "Level select" code with Knuckles and go to the level Death Egg Zone 1 or 2. You will be playing Death Egg Zone with Knuckles. Note: You can not defeat the Master in Death Egg Zone 1 as Knuckles.Fight Robotnik in Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 as Knuckles: SONIC & KNUCKLES ALONE Get three Chaos Emeralds (no more and do not fail in getting any) in Act 1, and three more in Act 2 (again not failing). Fail at getting the seventh Chaos Emerald before the pulley leading up to the battle with the Act 2 Boss. Find another Chaos Emerald far off to the left and succeed in getting it. Make sure to have well over 50 rings and pass the lamp post slowly (stop just after hitting it). If you see red stars, jump in and get more rings. When out of the goal, power up to Super Knuckles only as you are jumping to get the last three rings. Run over to the "underground" machine and jump on it, standing there after the one jump. You should see Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the machine instead of Robo-Robotnik. It seems to work most of the time.

However, if you play as Knuckles and reach this Boss, it will instead fire rockets and use the flame only when Knuckles is at close range.Upside down characters: SONIC & KNUCKLES WITH SONIC 3 This trick will turn Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles upside-down.
