Other Railroads Passenger Cars used in SP trains.

by Bruce Petty

During the 1960s, Southern Pacific passenger trains used other railroads passenger equipment in their passenger trains. This was common on several trains that ran as joint railroad passenger service. Name trains, such as the City of San Francisco ran on SP, Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, to Chicago and the Golden State that ran from Los Angeles to Chicago on SP and Rock Island route.

Seen in this above photograph, this Milwaukee Road, 10-6 Sleeper, named Pacific Guard, used on the City of San Francisco. Union Pacific sold some of their cars to Milwaukee Road. Note the SP car on the right was also built by Budd.

Some of the finest detailed passenger car models have just been manufactured in HO this year by Walters Inc., such as this Union Pacific 10-6 Sleeper. The model is made in other road names too such as SP, but are not exactly correct. I have several of UP their cars and want to re letter one as in the above photo to Milwaukee Road.

Walters went to the extra effort to model the trucks and underbody equipment. This was never well done by other passenger car HO manufactures.
