Aluminum Die-cast Parts

Creating aluminum alloy die cast wheels for OEM and aftermarket customers required fast turnaround of a new design to get it to market quickly.

Complex surfaces were created in I-DEAS Surfacer (Freeform). These were combined with solid models of the rim. Each size was then modified to create versions for 4-, 5-, and 6-bolt hubs and 13" to 17" rim sizes while still maintaining design intent for the style.

A gravity or low-pressure mold was then designed and detailed in order to mold the wheels in the internal foundry. Core/Cavity parting line, NC path generation, tool turning, gating, workholding, and cooling requirements were identified and incorporated into the 2 and 4-part tool designs.

Turnaround from concept to tooling to molding and engineering testing to mass production was as fast as eight weeks for some designs.
