Sheet Metal Design Considerations

I have worked with the design criteria for many materials, foremost which has been sheet metal. Complex surfaces were created and analyzed to create Class-A quality panels. Considerations for minimum bend radius, stamping memory, draft angle, draw depth, core/cavity parting lines, progressive die surfaces (for deep draws), strengthening beads, holes, and relief notches were required for each design.

For assemblies, cut lines, and alignment with adjacent parts were also part of the design process. Performance (energy absorption) during crash simulations (FEA) and physical test sleds were also incorporated into the designs.
