Automotive Interiors I used ICEM Surf, CATIA, and IDEAS to create automotive interior trim pieces for door panels, pillars, seat moldings, center consoles, instrument panels, package trays, and headliners. Surface and solid modeling techniques were used in the creation of the CAD models. These parts were formed from thermoplastics and thermoset plastics, some reinforced for strength characteristics. Class A surface quality was needed for the first side of material (show side) and fastening features and bosses, principal locating guides, and heatstakes were needed for the second surface. Attention was paid to forming techniques (injection molding, blow-molding), texture, finish, minimum radii, material thickness (to avoid weakness or heatsinks), draft angles, die parting lines, and clearance studies for assembly tolerance stack-ups to create these parts. |
