Candles

Candles are used for the fire parts of a ritual and as "timers" to determine when the ritual is complete. If you are a purist you will wish to light candles using a splinter from another fire or lighter, otherwise a match or lighter will be fine. The color and scent of a candle are important in the makeup. For more information on scent, please see the incense section of this page. The following is a general guideline for color:

White) Purity, Truth, Purification, Spirituality

Black) Removal, Destruction, Physical

Red) Energy, Sexuality, Emotions

Blue) Meditation, Serenity, Metaphysical Manifestation

Yellow) Study, Charisma, Intellect

When determining what color to use mix the colors as appropriate. For example, if you desire love you may wish to mix red(sexuality), with yellow(Charisma), and make it very dark in color for the physical nature of the desire(Result a dark Orange). If you find a resource on candles that you like, feel free to use that instead. Remember your ring of truth! Do your rituals as they feel right to you! As you practice you will learn the nature of metaphysics and your place in it!

Making Candles

Candles are actually fairly easy to make but there are several options.  You may purchase wicking to make them and this is certainly the best way, but if it is unavailable you may use any loose thread cotton string. There are a few different types of wax available also:

1) Beeswax -- Burns a long time, expensive, natural, little waste, natural substance.(Overall the very best)

2) Paraffin -- Burns fairly well, inexpensive, easy to find, mixes well with colors and pigments.

3) Sealing wax -- Acceptable substitute

Method #1

Melt the wax at a low temperature (simmer or 250 degrees) until liquid. This process will be faster if the wax is shaved into the pan/pot. Mix in the desired colors/oils/herbs. Reheat until thin liquid and stir.

Take wicking material and attach a weight to the end and dip into melted wax. Repeat process until wax cools too much to dip anymore or the candle is desired thickness. Trim bottom, and voila! There is an awesome ritual candle. This method makes great candles but tends to waste wax, and requires a lot of wax to make candles very long (and a deep pot!)

Method #2

Melt wax in pot at simmer or 250 degrees or microwave until liquid. Mix in desired ingredients. Remelt. Place a piece of wax paper on a cookie sheet and pour wax into cookie sheet. Try to be certain that the wax is of even thickness, Allow the wax to cool until it is soft but firm (not liquid). Place the wicking material on one end, and roll the sheet of wax until thickness is as desired. (Don't forget to peel off the wax paper as you roll the wax.) Clip one end and voila! You have a candle! This method wastes very little wax, and doesn't require any special type of pot/pan.

Method #3

Make a mold out of cardboard, paper mache, Light bulb, (any thing that will not leak). Tie the wicking material to the bottom and on a cross member at the top (Like a toothpick sideways) Melt and mix the wax as described in the above
