~ PASSAGE 185 ~
BRINGING DOWN MAMA

Nanith chucked his stick at the bear, but it sailed wide. Aramil dashed out a handfull of rose petals on wings of a spell, but it did nothing. Teflar shot another arrow, but it missed completely; attempts to bring down the enraged beast failed miserably.

" Teflar, that was a stupid move! You should know better!" cried the psionic with startled worry.

The bear lumbered forward and started to chase the hobbit as he sprung for the safety of the trees. The carnivore gained surprisingly fast and the fellowship was left to few choices on their situation.

Teflar manuevered behind the bear as it chased the rogue to the foot of a great elm. " Turn around little one! Toward the rope bridge!" The ranger fired another arrow and it struck the beast behind the neck!! It roared and stumbled headlong upon the ground kicking up dirt right before Nanith's scrambling feet!
The little halfling thought better of matters when noticing the wizard passing onto the beginnings of the rope bridge. He hopped down from the ungrounded, curling roots of the tree and raced past Erelis who stood by with scythe in hand. As the psion came hard upon the bear determined to end its misery, a violent uppercut from the injured beast met him! Sharp claws from a right paw tore through Meadows left shoulder. Just as quickly, however, the curved blade of the scythe sliced down upon the bending bear's head ending its days.

Teflar, again armed with an arrow, ran up to the dead mammal as it slumped on the earthfloor in one furry heap. Erelis plopped straight down on his butt while a thick sweat formed on his brow. He tossed his trusty weapon aside into the grass. and stared vacantly towards the sky. " That infant will surely die... a death sentence unjustly served."

The ranger stared mutely at the ground as if unsure on what he had done. When the rope bridge creaked from the weight of Aramil carefully traversing over it, the fighting pair swung their heads in unison over at their two fleeing friends. Nanith stood at the beginning of the suspension watching the elf test his steps with every pace he walked. He was midway when Nanith began his own careful crossing.

Teflar placed his bow in the grass and bent down upon the psionic " How bad is the injury, my friend?" Erelis lay slowly back into the earth as if he were suddenly ill. " It is too fresh to tell. I must concentrate on healing the scrapes before it gets infected."

The woodsman nodded and rose up again. " I'll be right back. I must tell our men to wait or join us. We should stick together!" As the ranger trotted away beckoning the pair off the bridge, Meadows closed his eyes and rested his mind.

1 PM: Under the hot sun, Erelis managed to claim the hobbit off the bridge, but the elf made it to the other side refusing to return. " I want no part of those animals." said the mage warily. No sooner had he said this when he turned his head towards the north forestline. Teflar, not wanting to encourage the wizard's spoiled behavior with more plead insistance, escorted the halfling back towards the fallen bear.

Sweat beaded upon Nanith's forehead as he swung up his face and arms in regret. Erelis breathed shallowly upon the ground and the ranger dropped down next to him to study the shredded fabric clinging to the psionic's chest. Teflar prayed and followed the rise and slow fall of Meadows torso.

" We must find the others soon." lamented Nanith standing nearby with a frustrated gaze. He saw the wizard step out of view into the shadows of the northern trees. With a croaky voice, Erelis responded rather simply " Not to worry buddy. They have already found us...." Before the pair could wonder what the psion was referring too, a shriek from a hawk echoed above the canyon.
