~ PASSAGE 110 ~
SINISTER SENTRIES

Dry, stale air assailed Teflar's nostrils as he slowly lowered onto the sunrod below. The smell of a charnel house was immediately evident before his feet touched the smooth, hard floor. Smothering a cough in the crook of his arm, he looked about quickly for danger; his thumping heart betraying any bold notion he had in mind to ready himself.
But...all seemed still and strangely silent.
The room was similar to the others as it held its circular make. Up ahead against the northern wall, an extensive table was overfilled with an array of laboratory equipment. Twisting glass tubes and bottles of multi-colored liquid lined the whole of its wooden surface. Man-sized statues of knights in full chainmail and helm formed a ring around the entire room. A black doubledoor, almost invisible to the stark brilliance of the sunrod, stood out from the east wall.
The ranger bent low grabbing the sunrod in his left hand and examined the cement floor immediately around him. The area was clear of any presence or passage as if nothing had disturbed the area for ages; yet no dust had settled there neither.

Looking up at the trapdoor, Teflar notified loudly to his friends the brief description of the room. He added " I see no foes. I'll look around for a ladder, because I can't see that whoever worked down here climbed a rope every time they wanted to leave and enter." As Teflar shuffled about searching for his prop, Nanith came wriggling down the rope. At the bottom, the hobbit crinkled his nose at his surroundings and shined the last sunrod around while the six helmed faces of the guard posed its ornamental stance. Shadows seemed to dart around the arched room opposing the logic that a torchlight flickered its wavering illumination. Armed with a sudden dagger, the rogue set to searching for any hidden traps.

Soon, Loten dropped down to join the pair, his sword already being prepared for any serious threat. While the ranger never discovered a climbing device nor did the hobbit any obvious traps, the paladin indeed appeared visibly troubled. This whole room radiates evil..." his wary eyes focused on the silent wards around them "... especially these suits of armor."

As the stink seemed to intensify, Nanith walked over to the lab bench where he found four stoppered triangular beakers of blue, yellow, red, and green. To the side, a tiny measuring chalice made of lead marked its volume at 1 liter. " I think you both should take a look at this." the hobbit breathed irritably; his tiny feet extending on tiptoe to view the apparatus. " Where is the instruction manual for all this?"

Teflar stared at the statues with a firm grip on his shortsword. " There are more of them than us. If they are made of evil magic, might they be protecting those doors?" He stepped before the blackened doorframe where a strange lapis scripture imbedded in the ebon stone.

Loten yelled to the ceiling portal " Any that can do so, come down now!" Within moments, the rope started quivering and Erelis slid easily down the lariat.

Teflar eyed the strange letters then back at the malevolent sentries.
" This is beyond my ability to understand. Aramil should have been down here."

Nanith turned and watched the ugly knights through narrowed eyelids while covering his nose in revulsion. He then jolted backwards exclaiming " I could have sworn that one just winked at me!" With panic, he pointed at a nearby statue.

Erelis, taking in the strange workshop, bravely arrived at the hobbit's constituent of fright. " That was not a wink, little one. And these are not statues. Worms infest the eyes...{cough,cough} of these..."
Suddenly, the nightmare of the four heroes sprung to life as the six sinister sentries swarmed at them!!!
