This is pretty much representative of my life as a science major at Tech. Come to think of it, some of that equipment looks familiar...
I was going to make this all pretty, but I realize now that that would be stupid and limiting. My name is Jessica (and that is all you internet stalkers need to know). I'm 21 and a Senior at Georgia Tech; I love it here. My major is Biology and within that I am concentrating on Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, as well as getting a certificate in Organic Chemistry / Biochemistry. In case you can't tell, I like science. I've wanted to get my doctorate and go into research since I was in ninth grade and this year I'll actually start applying to grad schools and all that hejaz, which is a bit daunting. I want to do gene therapy because gene therapy is cool and it makes people better. What else...? I'm an only child and have two cats back home. My parents are pretty cool, especially since they can't give me a curfew anymore. My cousin, Molly, rocks. She lives in West Virginia but I think I've slept over at her house more than anyone else's. We've been pen pals since 1989. Laura's my best friend and, unfortunately, she goes to UNC Chapel Hill. Despite this, she's still stellar. I have a bunch of friends here but if I start listing them then I'll inadvertently leave someone out and they'll get all upset and their panties in a wad and we wouldn't want that, now would we? So I'll just mention Jenny, my roommate of two years. She and I make a pretty dangerous duo: I think up things and she does them. It makes for some good stories.
When I get stressed, I bake. I taught myself how to cook before I came to school Freshman year and now I have more cookbooks than textbooks and Cooking Light has eclipsed Newsweek as my favorite magazine. I love making cookies because cookies make people happy and it's fun to give them away. They are also tasty in lunches.
I'm incredibly clumsy and as a result I have at least nine bruises at any given point, seven of which I won't be able to tell you the origin. I'm also absentminded, like the time I locked my semi-formal dress in the bathroom on the day of semi-formal. Didn't mean to do that. Oops. But these are not necessarily what I call bad qualities. I like to think of them as endearing. Just a couple of my quirks.
I have a unique sense of humor. Edward Gorey books and Catch-22 are my laugh-out-loud books. I watch Miss America pageants and competitive ballroom dancing because they are so completely ridiculous and superficial. I'm the sort of person who will watch a chick flick and make snide comments under my breath about the probability of the outcomes.
Speaking of movies, my favorites are "Fiddler on the Roof," "What about Bob?" " Steel Magnolias" (I grew up on it), "Clueless", and "The X-Files." The only show I ever watch with any semblance of regularity is the X-Files. When I grow up I want to be Scully, only without all the yucky alien autopsies. Have you heard the David Duchovney song by Bree Sharp? It's very clever. On a "favorites" note, I love anything by Salinger, but by far the best is "Seymour: An Introduction." What I've read of Fitzgerald and Vonnegut is nice too. My favorite music is that of Ben Folds Five, Dave Matthews band, and classic rock in general.
I cannot live without carrot cake, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, or cereal. Well, technically, I could, but I'm not sure it would be worth it. Cadbury Creme eggs and Caffiene-Free Dr Pepper are also highly revered. I like cheese and potatoes, but I hate veggies, though zucchini is growing on me (not literally). My Mamaw at one point made it her mission to convince me that I really did like beans but I won. Go me.
I have ten fingers and ten toes and, in that sense, I am very normal.
On my way back home... we're going home.
